Fellow Hermes devotee here - let me explain!!
So as you may know, Hermes is the god of messengers and travels, but he’s also the god of thieves and liars as well! He’s a trickster :) he likes to trick people and even steals Apollos cattle the day he was born (mythology) and hides his tracks. Being the god of thieves does make him a liar and a master of deception.

You cannnnn also maybe say because he does have a mission to guide souls to the afterlife so he does work in the underworld a lot but it isn’t the biggest reason. Main one would be because he’s a trickster, a master of deception and stealing.
