ℹ️ ADHD Drugs Make Big Money, But We Still Don’t Know the Risks

☑️ LORETA cross-frequency coherence

The image shows the LORETA cross-frequency coherence between Brodmann area one and the other 43 Brodmann areas as a function of distance from Brodmann area one starting on the bottom row. The x & y axes show the center frequencies of the Hilbert transform involved in the cross-frequency coherence computation. The color scale is the magnitude of Z scores from - 3 st. dev. to + 3 st. dev. Striking hemispheric asymmetries are evident in this patient. The left hemisphere exhibits reduced cross-frequency coherence in comparison the the right hemisphere, especially between Brodmann area BA1 and BA10, BA1 and BA35, BA1 and BA27 and BA1 and BA9 from Theta/Alpha2 to Theta/Hi-Beta

☑️ EP Viewer
The new EP Viewer allows you to view previously recorded EP files, and to superimpose multiple EP files for comparison. You can view the curves and/or the scalp distribution. This version also allows the user to add or correct age for the normative comparisons.

📑 EEG beta and low gamma power correlates with inattention in patients with major depressive disorder

The beta (12–30 Hz) and low gamma (30–50 Hz) powers in fronto-central regions were negatively correlated with inattention scores.

Highlights
🔹 MDD showed significant negative correlation with beta/gamma band power.
🔹 Subjective depressive symptom showed more variance to explain the inattention compared to objective symptom.
🔹 Anxiety did not have a direct effect on inattention, but was fully mediated by depressive symptoms.
🔹 qEEG could reflect the functional ability of patients with MDD.

✳️ Free Will from the neuroscience perspective
http://blog.neuroelectrics.com/free-will/

🔸 neuroimaging techniques such as EEG and fMRI can help us understand if all the reasons we think we’ve made a decision for are actually just after-the-fact rationalizations.

🔸 Furthermore, it has also been suggested that the sense of authorship can be manipulated using neuromodulation techniques.

مقایسه دو روش درمانی TMS و ECT در بیماران مقاوم به درمان دارویی افسردگی اساسی MDD:

📑 Comparison between neurostimulation techniques repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation vs electroconvulsive therapy for the treatment of resistant depression: patient preference and cost-effectiveness

🔹The effectiveness of ECT and TMS as reflected in change in Beck Depression Inventory BDI-II and Visual Analog Scale VAS scores was equivalent (P = .0001 for both modalities), whereas effectiveness characterized by change in Hamilton Depression Rating Scale HDRS-21 score was stronger for ECT than for TMS (P = .0001 vs P = .012)

🔹Adverse effects were more common and troublesome for patients who received ECT. On follow-up, up to 60% of the ECT group reported short- or intermediate-term adverse effects, mostly memory loss. In comparison, 30% of the TMS group reported minor, short-term effects such as headache during treatment, which resolved within a few hours.

🔹ECT patients reported a higher percentage of side effects (P<0.01) and the TMS treatment scored better in terms of patient preference

📑 Biofeedback as Prophylaxis for Pediatric Migraine: A Meta-analysis
American Academy of Pediatrics

🔹 Biofeedback reduced migraine frequency (mean difference, –1.97 [95% confidence interval (CI), –2.72 to –1.21]; P < .00001), attack duration (mean difference, –3.94 [95% CI, –5.57 to –2.31]; P < .00001), and headache intensity (mean difference, –1.77 [95% CI, –2.42 to –1.11]; P < .00001) compared with a waiting-list control.

🔹 CONCLUSIONS: Biofeedback seems to be an effective intervention for pediatric migraine, but in light of the limitations, further investigation is needed to increase our confidence in the estimate.

Neurocinema: The method of using neuroscience to help moviemakers vet and refine film elements such as noscripts, characters, plots, scenes, and effects.

🔹 A sizable number of neuromarketing companies already brain test movie trailers for the major studios through fMRI, EEG, galvanic skin response, eye-tracking and other biometric approaches.

🔹 Based on an fMRI study, in which he concluded that certain types of films (e.g. horror, action, sci-fi) produced high activation scores in the amygdala region of viewer subjects' brains, the part that controls disgust, anger, lust, and fear. Hasson asserted that horror filmmakers can potentially control audiences' brains by precisely editing films to maximize amygdalic excitement and thus "control for" buzz and success at the theater.

🔹 During the making of the epic hit Avatar that "a functional-MRI study of brain activity would show that more neurons are actively engaged in processing a 3-D movie than the same film seen in 2-D."

Looking at Brain Activity May Aid Self Motivation

📑 Cognitive Neurostimulation: Learning to Volitionally Sustain Ventral Tegmental Area Activation

Highlights:
🔹 ventral tegmental area (VTA) self-activation was inconsistent in untrained participants
🔹 After neurofeedback training, participants self-activated VTA without external cues
🔹 Control groups and NAcc feedback group failed to self-activate VTA or NAcc
🔹 After VTA neurofeedback training, connectivity in mesolimbic networks increased
