مغز ما خاطرات رو با کانتکستی که درونش شکل گرفتن رمزگذاری میکنه. چنین چیزی به این معنیه که نشانه‌های محیطی موجود در زمان شکل‌گیری حافظه بخشی از رد پای حافظه می‌شه. مثلاً وقتی یک محیط مثل اتاق رو ترک می‌کنیم و وارد محیط دیگه‌ای می‌شیم تغییر محیط می‌تونه نشانه‌های بازیابی رو مختل کنه و به خاطر سپردن حافظه رو سخت تر کنه. وقتی به محیط اولیه برمی‌گردیم نشانه‌ها دوباره فعال میشن و بازیابی حافظه رو تسهیل می‌کنن.

حافظه تداعی گر توانایی مغز برای ارتباط دادن قطعات مرتبط به هم از اطلاعاته. دو نوع اصلی از این حافظه وجود داره: ضمنی (implicit) و صریح(explicit)

حافظه تداعی گر ضمنی شامل ارتباطات ناخودآگاهه مثل برانگیختگی که توش مواجهه با یک محرک به پاسخ به محرک دیگه بدون آگاهی فرد تاثیر می‌ذاره. مثلاً دیدن گل رز باعث میشه به بوش فکر کنی بدون اینکه به طور مستقیم رایحه ش رو حس کنی.

حافظه تداعی گر صریح شامل یادآوری آگاهانه تداعی‌ها هستش مثل مرتبط کردن چهره فرد با اسمش یا به خاطر سپردن حقایق و رویدادها. مثلاً یادآور یک شخص با لباسش

تو این مورد حافظه تداعی گر کار می‌کنه یعنی وقتی که به یک مسئله‌ای فکر می‌کنی مغز ما اون رو به یک فعالیت خاص مرتبط می‌کنه دقیقاً مشابه متغیرها تو برنامه نویسی.
