We're seeing a lot of initiatives across Europe and the EU to replace Microsoft services with #Linux and #OpenSource solutions.

This could be massive for Linux and the entire community, so I'm sharing my thoughts on why this is happening, why it's great, but also why it could still very much die down very quickly:

A strong statement of resistance to the relentless marketing of "AI" in education spaces. I encourage all educators to have a look and consider signing on:

One more time for the people in the back: every conversation about "AI" should begin and end with its environmental impacts:

"We tend to think of the cloud as something invisible - floating above us in the digital ether. But the reality is very physical.

The cloud lives in over 10,000 data centres around the world, most of them located in the US, followed by the UK and Germany.

Many centres use evaporative cooling systems, where water absorbs heat and evaporates - similar to how sweat wicks away heat from our bodies. On hot days, a single facility can use millions of gallons.

One study estimates that AI-driven data centres could consume 1.7 trillion gallons of water globally by 2027."

Oh no…now Meta is automatically sharing our private messages to its AI. As far as I can tell, you can only turn it off for each message thread, one at a time (and there seems to be no option to turn it off *at all* for group threads!). Yet another privacy disaster from Facebook.

I use Messenger btw for family and non-tech friends, so don’t (ahem) shoot the messenger.

Please report any account that tells you that you need to verify your #Mastodon account to continue using it through a private message. It is a scam. We do not require identity verification. Real staff accounts either have a special role badge on their profile or are verified through the joinmastodon.org domain and will typically never reach out through private messages.

Does showing seconds in the Windows System Tray actually use more power?

On Windows, there's an option to show the seconds on the taskbar clock, but it comes with a warning that it might reduce battery life if you switch it on. LTT Labs decided to look into this to see just how much of a thing this really is, and they concluded that yes, it does actually affect bat

Governments are cracking down on emulation devices for promoting “piracy”.

Okay, but what isn’t an emulation device? Every PC, smartphone, and console is an emulation device.

But also, what about homebrew? Or systems like the TIC-80 that only exist through emulation?
