📷 Google has officially announced Google Camera 'Pro Controls' exclusively for the Pixel 8 Pro.

In addition to the already available options to control white balance, exposure, and shadow brightness, on the Pixel 8 Pro you can now manually adjust focus, shutter speed, and ISO. Also, the new pro mode settings allow you to take 50 MP photos across the entire zoom range. Even when Pro Controls is fine-tuned, all of Pixel's HDR+ computational photography capabilities remain enabled.

Google has unveiled a statue of Android 13. Even though Google has stopped *officially* giving Android tasty names, it continues to mark each version with a statue accented by a number. The Android 13 statuette is in the form of a swing where the top rung…
🤖 A new Android statue dedicated to the Android 14.

Android 14 is codenamed UpsideDownCake. And Google has done something quite original, the company has put an upside down Bagdroyd on an upside down cake. It's like he's holding his dessert, but in reverse.

What do you think?

A demo of how the Pixel 8 Pro's thermometer works.

One of Google's strangest decisions was to build a thermometer into the 8 Pro. At the current stage, it can measure the temperature of surrounding objects, while measuring human skin temperature is limited until the company gets approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Owners of the flagship will have access to a separate Thermometer app. In it, you can select the material to measure to get the most accurate readings. Available options include Default, Food & organic, Beverages & water, Cast iron, Ceramic & glass, Matte metal, Shiny metal, Plastic & rubber, Fabric, Wood, and Walls & windows.

To use, you need to aim the sensor "within 5 cm of the object for best results". This will display a pulsing icon approximately where the thermometer is actually located.

Accuracy may vary depending on the material selected, the distance to the object, and at temperatures approaching -20°C and 150°C.

The Pixel 8’s generative AI wallpaper feature is SO COOL!

You can create brand new wallpapers that nobody else has ever seen just by choosing a few topics and colors from some preset options. While you can’t go wild with custom prompts, you still have a ton of choice!

After you create and apply a wallpaper, it’s saved to your device so you can change to it at any time. You can also tap the pencil icon to modify the prompt used to generate it.

The wallpapers you generate have metadata added to them that lists the AI wallpaper version, the prompt used to generate it, the transform matrix, and a “credit” line that says “AI-generated with Google.”

Under the hood, Google’s generative AI wallpaper app uses an AI-generated text-to-image diffusion model to create wallpapers. (I believe at one point it used Parti, but that may have changed.) All the processing is done server-side, so it takes a few seconds for it to work.

The generative AI wallpaper feature is coming first to the Pixel 8. Since it works entirely server-side, there’s no reason it can’t come to other Pixels in a future update, like the upcoming December 2023 Pixel Feature Drop. (It’s being tested on the Pixel 6 & Pixel 7, in fact.)

The Google Clock app on the Pixel 8 can show weather info for different cities on the home screen! You have to go to settings to enable “local weather on clock” after which you’ll see weather info in the Clock tab as well as when using the “World” clock widget.

Note that the weather information is actually provided by a separate app called “Weather” (package name com.google.android.apps.weather) and not from the Google Clock app itself. This lets the Google Clock app show weather information without requesting the location permission.

This feature might come to the Pixel 5a and later in the December 2023 Pixel Feature Drop, but right now it’s only available on the Pixel 8 series.

Face Unlock on the Pixel 8 series is now classified as a Class 3 (formerly Strong) biometric, which allows it to be used for BiometricPrompt (ie. authenticate within apps) and the Android Keystore.

This means you'll be able to use the Pixel 8's Face Unlock in banking apps and for payment apps like Google Wallet.

By the way, if you want to learn more about how biometric sensors are classified and how Google enforces/verifies these classifications, I made a post for subscribers that dives into this.

🗳 Gmail app is now available on watches running Wear OS 3.0.

Until now, you could only read and interact with your email on your smartwatch from notifications, but with the introduction of a separate app, that's all about to change. You can now view all emails from your mail, and there is support for multiple accounts.

The app also supports Wear OS features like watch face complication, which displays the number of new (recent) emails. It does not display the total number of unread emails. It also has its own card.

It is already available on Google Play, you can install it from your phone or directly from the watch.

A few clarifications about upgrading to stable Android 14 from the beta. I see quite a few questions in the comments, so I thought I'd clarify a few details. First, you need to check which build you are on. You can do this by going to Settings > About phone…
And now for those who want to get into the Beta version of Android 14 QPR1 from the stable Android 14.

Yes, Android 14 QPR1 Beta 1 contains more new features and fixes than the stable release, and essentially uses newer source code. However, the first 14 QPR1 beta (U1B1.230908.003) has a September patch, while the stable release of Android 14 (UP1A.231005.007) runs on the October security patch.

That's why by registering for the beta you can't get an update to the beta. All you have to do is wait for the new build to be released. Presumably, it will be Android 14 QPR1 Beta 2. (The final, stable version will be released as a regular update in December)

Android 14 QPR1 Beta 2: New 'Software Updates' page.

The Settings / System / System Updates section has been renamed to Software Updates. The new page now incorporates System Updates (Android security patches), Google Play System Updates and App Updates, tapping on which redirects to the updates page on Google Play.

Mishaal Rahman was the first to discover work on this feature in the first beta version.
