It is according to him, and others (as the reporter says that some other "experts" think that too), waged so that Russia finds God through adversity and privation (adversity and privation inflicted on others, one should assume). He goes on to add that Russia is about finding God in the first place; "either Russia finds God" he says or "Russia is meaningless".

As I have been saying repeatedly, this is the true essence of this war for Russians. One needs only to listen to what Russians say - TO EACH OTHER, IN RUSSIAN, not to unsuspecting Western audiences in English. For Russia this is a holy war: a Crusade, a Jihad against the "infidel" West, and the Ukrainian "heretics" who, according to Russians, betrayed the "Russian World". The latter is the secular religion of Russia, through which it counterposes itself against the West, whom it views as its arch-nemesis.

The West finally needs to finally come to grips with this reality. It is not about territories, not about geopolitics, not about spheres of influence, "NATO expansion" or whatever other nonsense. Russians are in a holy war against us. And we should respond accordingly.
