Yūnus bin 'Ubayd (rahimahullāh) said: “I have not seen anyone whose concern is (restraint) of his tongue, except I saw that (being a cause) of righteousness in all his actions.”

أنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ عُمَرَ الْمُقْرِئُ , أنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ الْآجُرِّيُّ , أنا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ: أَحْمَدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْجَبَّارِ الصُّوفِيُّ , نَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَكَّارٍ , نَا عَبِيدَةُ يَعْنِي: ابْنَ حُمَيْدٍ عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ , عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُرَّةَ , قَالَ: قَالَ مَسْرُوقٌ:

“It is enough as knowledge that a man is fearful of Allāh;
«بِحَسْبِ امْرِئٍ مِنَ الْعِلْمِ أَنْ يَخْشَى اللَّهَ ,

And it is enough as ignorance that a man becomes amazed with his knowledge.”
وَبِحَسْبِ امْرِئٍ مِنَ الْجَهْلِ أَنْ يُعْجَبَ بِعِلْمِهِ»

وَعَنْ مُطَرِّفٍ: أَنَّهُ قَالَ لِبَعْضِ إِخْوَانِهِ:

“O Father of such and such!
يَا أَبَا فُلاَنٍ،

If you have a need, then do not speak to me;
إِذَا كَانَتْ لَكَ حَاجَةٌ، فَلاَ تُكَلِّمْنِي،

Rather write it down on a piece of paper,
وَاكْتُبْهَا فِي رُقْعَةٍ،

Because I fear seeing the humiliation of asking on your face.”
فَإِنِّي أَكْرَهُ أَنْ أَرَى فِي وَجْهِكَ ذُلَّ السُّؤَالِ.

'Umayr Ibn Ishāq reported that the Khawārij were mentioned in presence of Abū Hurayrah (may Allāh be pleased with him).

Abee Jābiyah Al-Firā’ī (rahimahullāh) narrated from Ash-Sha'bī (rahimahullāh) who said:
أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ: حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الجَابِيَةِ الفَرَّاءُ، قَالَ: قَالَ الشَّعْبِيُّ:

“Indeed, we are not learned men of understanding;
إِنَّا لَسْنَا بِالفُقَهَاءِ،

Rather we listen to hadīth and transmit it.
وَلَكِنَّا سَمِعنَا الحَدِيْثَ فَرَوَيْنَاهُ،

But the learned men of understanding are those who act after knowing.”
وَلَكِنَّ الفُقَهَاءَ مَنْ إِذَا عَلِمَ، عَمِلَ.

Mālik bin Maghūl (rahimahullāh) said:
حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ، ثنا يَعْقُوبُ الدَّوْرَقِيُّ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ نُمَيْرٍ، عَنْ مَالِكِ بْنِ مِغْوَلٍ، قَالَ:

It was said to Sha'bī (rahimahullāh): “scholar”.
عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ وَقَالَ لَهُ رَجُلٌ: أَيُّهَا الْعَالِمُ.

He said: “The scholar is the one who fears Allāh.”
فَقَالَ: «الْعَالِمُ مَنْ يَخَافُ اللهَ»

“If removing something harmful from a path is a charity, then indeed throwing something harmful into a path is a bad deed.”
