What is an emission nebula?

There are separate regions of higher density in the interstellar medium. These are clusters of gas, plasma, and space dust - interstellar clouds.

If hydrogen in such a region is ionized, i.e. represented as plasma, it is called an H II region. These regions are a type of emission nebula.

The emission nebulae that are H II regions are regions of active star formation. The closest to Earth that can be observed in the Northern Hemisphere is the Orion Nebula.
