Polish King Jan III Sobieski defeats the Ottoman Turks at the Battle of Vienna, 12 September 1683, by Martino Altomonte. Sobieski led the Polish cavalry along with Austrians and Germans in a massive charge down the hillside towards to the Ottoman besiegers surrounding Vienna. Soon, the Ottoman battle line was broken and their forces scattered in disarray.
This battle marked a turning point in Ottoman expansion into Europe, after which they gained no further ground.
