10 September 1622: A group of 55 Christians are killed at Nagasaki by the new government of Japan, which saw Christians as being a threat to Japanese society. The victims included Europeans, Japanese, and Koreans. Over 100,000 more were eventually killed during the 16th-17th centuries for their Christian faith. The remaining Christians in Japan at that time either recanted or went into hiding.
