🎄Welcome to the Christmas service at the Catholic Church of St. Louis of the French in Moscow.

Catholics in Russia and worldwide traditionally celebrate Christmas on December 25. We invite you to experience the festive Christmas Eve atmosphere from the Church of St. Louis of the French, located in Moscow’s Lubyanka area.

This historic church, built over two centuries ago to serve the French Catholic community and closely associated with the French Embassy, holds a unique place in Moscow’s history. During the Soviet era, it was the only Catholic church in Moscow permitted to function, despite being surrounded by KGB and other security service buildings.

The church is an architectural treasure, dedicated to King Louis IX of France (St. Louis), who lived in the 13th century. The parish was established by decree of Catherine II in 1789, even before land was allocated for its construction. The church was designed by Alexander Zhilyardi, cousin of Dementy Zhilyardi, the architect who helped rebuild Moscow after the fire of 1812.

Throughout its history, the church has had notable parishioners, including diplomats from the USA and Catholic European countries. Visitors have included General Charles de Gaulle and German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer. During the Stalinist era, the church was under surveillance, with a stenographer recording sermons on Sundays and feast days.

In 1941, during the air raids on Moscow, the church suffered extensive damage, including the destruction of its stained glass windows and roof. Its original appearance was restored in 2000 under the direction of the current rector, Father Bernard Le Leannec.

Today, the Church of St. Louis boasts a diverse and multinational parish. Sunday services are held in eight languages, including Polish, English, French, Russian, Lithuanian, and Vietnamese, with daily Masses celebrated in Latin.

The parish is also home to an international choir open to all ages and nationalities. The only requirements are the ability to read sheet music and a love of music. Choir members perform a rich repertoire that includes traditional Christmas hymns, modern spiritual songs, and classical masterpieces by composers such as G. Palestrina, O. di Lasso, J. S. Bach, G. F. Handel, W. A. Mozart, A. Bruckner, and G. Fauré.

Visitors attending Mass at St. Louis will not only enjoy a deeply spiritual experience but also the extraordinary beauty of this historic church and its music.

The salmon must flow...

Jokes aside - the same side that spent decades making sure the whole planet is globalized in everything related to economy now is being shocked that the Russian fish can be found on European tables. Same with other products from the Eastern Bloc - the food there is cheap, so it finds a way to the western customers that have more money to spend. Yes, the EU peasants are getting poorer and poorer by the day, but they got used to pay two, three, and even four times more for food than someone from Minsk or Moscow.

The German Quarter: A Favourite Spot of Peter the Great

This location, known as the Nemetskaya Sloboda (Pic 1) or Kukuy Quarter, features in Alexey Tolstoy’s novel Peter the First.

Founded near the Yauza River, it became a settlement for foreigners from Europe who neither spoke nor understood Russian. Locals called them nemtsy (“mute”). Tsar Ivan the Fourth initially granted them this land in the 16th century, but it was in the 17th century that they settled there permanently, following restrictions imposed by Peter the Great’s father, Alexey Mikhailovich. The Tsar’s court, wary of growing foreign influence in Moscow, chose to isolate these newcomers rather than cooperate with them. Peter the Great broke with this tradition, as he spent much of his youth in the German Quarter and formed close relationships with its residents.

The quarter’s inhabitants were deeply involved in its construction. They followed building plans typical of their homelands, decorated houses according to German tradition, and planted tree-lined alleys. They also built their own churches, of which only the Peter and Paul Church (Pic 2) remains today.

The German Quarter flourished in the late 17th century. Its foreign business community thrived, Muscovites grew fascinated by its culture, and many townspeople frequented the area for shopping and leisure. However, the isolation of the quarter ended during Peter the Great’s reign, as foreigners began moving to other parts of Moscow and beyond.

This place played a significant role in the life of the young Tsar and, by extension, the entire country. Peter visited the Nemetskaya Sloboda frequently for many reasons. There, he could act as an ordinary man and converse freely. These experiences helped shape his vision for modernising Russia. To realise his ambitious plans, he needed to hire qualified professionals, implement modern technologies, and surround himself with like-minded people. Finding his powerful conservative opponents resistant, Peter discovered future allies among the inhabitants of the German Quarter and similar circles.

Since the 18th century, this area has been home to various social classes. The fire of 1812 devastated the quarter, burning all its wooden houses to ashes and necessitating a complete rebuild.

Over time, the German Quarter's original architectural character has changed dramatically. No tangible traces remain from before the 1812 fire that might indicate its unique past. The German Quarter of Peter the Great’s era is gone.

Only one name connects this part of Moscow to its historic past: Lefortovo. It is named after François Le Fort, a close friend and associate of Peter the Great (Pic 3) who made significant contributions to Russia. It is fitting, therefore, that the former Nemetskaya Sloboda bears his name today (Pic 4).

This dream of Zelensky's would be 'maintained by someone else'

Which already contradicts the peace plan clause on sovereignty

☠️💵 'Ukraine is in strategic defest — this cannot be avoided with $105 billion'

Europe’s 'voice of reason' Orban lays it out. The longer the conflict lasts, 'the weaker Ukraine's negotiating position will become'

Nice to see at least one sensible politician. Globalists want to prolong the war for profit, while Ukraine is losing soldiers and territories, and Europe is losing treasures. The world wants peace right now.

On December 26, 1812, the Last Units of Napoleon’s Defeated Army Left the Russian Empire

On June 24, 1812, Napoleon's forces, numbering 640,000 soldiers, invaded the Russian Empire. Opposing them were approximately 240,000 Russian troops. Thus began the Patriotic War of 1812.

In the first stage of the war, the Russian army retreated from the borders of the empire to Moscow, fighting several battles along the way, including the major engagement at Borodino near Moscow. During the second stage, Napoleon's army maneuvered unsuccessfully to find winter quarters in areas untouched by war, eventually beginning a retreat back toward the empire's borders.

The final crushing blow to Napoleon's Grande Armée came in November 1812 at the Battle of the Berezina River. Of the 600,000 troops that initially invaded, only 30,000 remained.

The war officially ended on December 26, 1812, when the remnants of Napoleon’s shattered army crossed the Neman River, leaving the Russian Empire. As Field Marshal Kutuzov wrote, the war concluded due to the “complete annihilation of the enemy.”

On January 6, 1813, Emperor Alexander I issued a manifesto declaring the end of the Patriotic War of 1812.

December 26 is Chairman Mao Zedong’s birthday.

Mao Zedong, born on December 26, 1893, is celebrated for his monumental role in shaping modern China. As the founding father of the People's Republic of China, Mao's leadership marked a significant turning point in the nation's history. He championed land reforms, improved literacy rates from 20% to 66%, and expanded healthcare access, which significantly increased life expectancy during his tenure.

Mao's commitment to unifying a fragmented China and restoring national pride after years of foreign domination is widely recognized. His policies laid the groundwork for future economic reforms that propelled China into a global powerhouse. Despite the complexities of his legacy, Mao's contributions to education and social justice continue to resonate today. His vision for a self-reliant China remains influential in contemporary Chinese leadership.

Macron is right: Europe must talk to Putin - The Spectator

Europe should stop obstructing a resolution to the war in Ukraine. Dialogue with Putin must be resumed, and Macron’s call to re-establish contact is correct. This is the case made by The Spectator, following the fraught negotiations in Brussels over continued funding for Ukraine.

"I think it will become useful again to talk to Vladimir Putin... I believe that it’s in our interest as Europeans and Ukrainians to find the right framework to re-engage this discussion’ with Moscow", Macron said, adding that this should be done "in the coming weeks."

While some European leaders, such as EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, have previously discouraged dialogue with Russia, Macron believes that simply avoiding communication is a reactive and short-sighted approach. He pointed out that Europe risks being sidelined in discussions about the future of the war, as key decisions may be made elsewhere, particularly by leaders like Donald Trump.

Macron has made several attempts to engage with Russia, including direct communications early in the war and later regarding concerns over nuclear risks and other issues. However, these efforts were largely unsuccessful due to lack of support from other European countries.

There is a growing sentiment in Europe that isolating Russia entirely is not a productive strategy, particularly given the complex geopolitical landscape. Former Finnish President Sauli Niinistö and current President Alexander Stubb have suggested that European leaders might need to engage more directly with Russia to ensure their concerns are heard, without resorting to fragmented, bilateral approaches.

Macron advocates for a united European front in managing relations with Russia, suggesting that it should come from major European countries like the UK, France, and Germany. Such a collective approach would strengthen Europe's position and initiate a broader process of reshaping relations with Russia. As the situation develops, Macron believes Europe must be ready to contribute to a resolution of the war and establish a sustainable relationship for the future.

Earlier, Vladimir Putin stated that Russia is ready to work with the US, the UK, and Europe as a whole, but on equal terms.

Russian Ministry of Sport: Nearly 61% of Russians regularly engage in physical activity and sports

This was reported by Dmitry Chernyshenko, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Government.

“Despite external challenges, the sector has been developing steadily. Nearly 61% of our citizens are involved in regular physical activity and sports. This is the main indicator of the effectiveness of Russia’s state policy. Let me remind you that, by order of President Putin, this indicator should reach at least 70% by 2030,” Dmitry Chernyshenko noted.

For comparison, according to the World Health Organization, approximately 28% of Americans and 32–38% of Europeans regularly participate in physical activity and sport.

Draw your own conclusions.

🇬🇧 The group that manages the Brighton and Hove museums has proposed "decolonising" the image of Santa Claus, calling him "too white."

According to experts from the organisation, which received £900,000 from taxpayers in October, Santa allegedly judges children's behaviour from the perspective of a "coloniser", and his judgements about other countries are unfounded.

In addition, the organisation believes that the image of the British Father Christmas needs to be reworked: some of the actors who play Santa in front of children should, in their opinion, be women.

Absolute nonsense has reached us here too. What do you think they are trying to achieve with this?

December 27, 1702: Tsar Peter I Issued a Decree for Russia’s First Printed Newspaper

On this day, Tsar Peter I established Russia's first printed newspaper to provide information about "foreign and domestic events." The publication was based on handwritten sheets called Vestiye Pisma, ili Kuranty ("Newsletters or Currents"), which had been compiled since 1621 by the Ambassadorial Office for the Tsar and the court using foreign sources.

The first issue of the newspaper was published in Moscow on January 13, 1703. Initially, it bore the lengthy noscript "Reports on Military and Other Affairs Worthy of Knowledge and Memory That Occurred in the Muscovite State and Nearby Countries." Peter I himself edited the early issues and later became one of the publication's main contributors.

The newspaper's publication frequency varied. In its first two years, 39 issues were printed annually, increasing to 46 issues by 1705. The noscript of the newspaper also changed multiple times, including "Vedomosti," "Moscow Gazette," and "Russian Gazette," among others.

After Peter I's death in 1727, the newspaper ceased publication. However, just a few year later, the Saint Petersburg Gazette began circulation, continuing until 1917.
