Protect yourself from wildfire smoke: use an N95 mask or better. I really recommend upgrading to a P-type filter that will also filter out oily particulates as well.
We deal with this every year now in Oregon. Yes, it is toxic and yes breathing it will affect your health in the long term despite what the propagandists on Fox News and such tell you.

On another note, if you suffer from allergies, N95 masks work great for filtering out pollen and reducing symptoms. Never be afraid to use your tools.
