Protect yourself from wildfire smoke: use an N95 mask or better. I really recommend upgrading to a P-type filter that will also filter out oily particulates as well.
We deal with this every year now in Oregon. Yes, it is toxic and yes breathing it will affect your health in the long term despite what the propagandists on Fox News and such tell you.

On another note, if you suffer from allergies, N95 masks work great for filtering out pollen and reducing symptoms. Never be afraid to use your tools.

Okay, so I've worked retail a good chunk of my life and I can tell you exactly why this whole thing concerning masks became a wedge issue.
Retailers large and small along with law enforcement have invested billions of dollars in the last 5 years to implement facial recognition and tracking into their security systems. They would love to make it illegal for your face to be obscured in public and this is eventually what they are gunning for. Law enforcement to "track criminals", but buisinesses also want to use this to track what their customers do in store—how they shop, what products they look at, how long they look at them, and their reactions.
Fox News and the Right-Wing spin machine is going nuts over masks not because of "freedom" but because they just dropped billions of dollars on what will be one of the largest consumer data collection systems to ever be implemented. Right as these systems were being turned on, COVID hit and their ability to sell your data so they could yield a return on your investment was temporarily blocked.
Millions of people died so a bunch of corporations could make record profits while the working-class is being asked to tighten their belts once again.
