uniswap 🦄
this protocol allows anyone to create an on-chain market maker for any erc-20 token. you deposit two halves of ether and token of the same value and that's it, you've created an uncensorable autonomous exchange.
the pricing is based on the constant product model (known as x*y=k), proposed by vitalik buterin, which keeps the reserves in relative equilibrium. anyone can add liquidity at the current price, earning 0.3% fee on every trade. it ensures that the total reserve grows with every trade. uniswap creator doesn't take any fees.
on ethereum side uniswap is composed of two formally verified smart contract, written in vyper. the first one is exchange factory, which tracks already created exchanges and allows anyone to create a new one. there are currently 36 exchanges deployed with $175,000 worth of ether and tokens pooled in total.
in addition to eth-erc20 swaps, the exchange contracts can tap into other token' pools by looking up the exchange address in their factory contract. this enables swaps between arbitrary erc20-erc20 pairs in a single transaction.
the contracts are heavily gas-optimized and use less gas than any other decentralized exchange. for example, uniswap uses 10x less gas than bancor, which provides a similar service.
the project is financed with a $100,000 #buidl grant it received from ethereum foundation back in august. you can learn more about uniswap by reading the documentation, the contracts, the initial whitepaper, the formal specification of the x*y=k model and, of course, by building something on top of it.
