Today’s lesson: Shirazi accent👆

Shirazi is an accent/dialect of the Persian language, spoken in Shiraz of course!
Some of its features are as following:
1. In the Shirazi accent, some words with the Long vowel /ɒː/ are changed into short vowels /o/ for example bālā (up) -> bālo.
2. In this accent, you hear a lot of /o/ and /uː/ at the end of words and sentences.
3. In the verb کردن (kardan) the first vowel is pronounced with the short vowel /e/ (kerdan)
4. Two of the words that are more common in the Shirazi accent and widely understood by other Persian speakers are āmū عامو (guy) or kāko کاکو (brother)

- البته متاسفانه این روزا خیلی ها دیگه این لهجه را فراموش کردند، مخصوصا جوونا، دیگه اینجوری حرف نمی زنند
But unfortunately, these days many people have forgotten this accent, especially the youth, who don’t speak like this anymore
- خب شما که انقدر قشنگ مثل ما حرف می زنید، برای چی با لهجه حرف می زنید؟
Why you do speak with an accent when you could speak beautifully like us?
- اولا که خوشوم میاد، بعدش هم دوست می دارَم، بعد می گم شما اِنگو (انگار) ای (این) آی کیو ات خیلی پایینه ها (4)، همین حالو گفتم، لهجه داره فراموش می شه، من دلم نمی خواد لهجم فراموش بشه، می فهمی؟، بعدش هم، تازه خوشم میاد یه جُی (جایی) که حرف می زنم، همه می فهمن اصل و نسبم چی چیه، اما شما چی چی؟، اصن (اصلا) وقتی حرف می زنی کسی می فهمه مال کجا هستی، از کجا اومدی
First of all, I like it (to speak this way), secondly I want (to speak like this) and by the way, you seem be suffering from low IQ, I just told you, (my) accent is disappearing, I don’t want it to be forgotten. Understood?! And also I like that when I speak somewhere, everybody can guess where I’m from, how about you? When you speak, can anybody guess where you are from?

مميزات اللهجة الشیرازية کثیر، لکن انا اذکر اهمها:
1. فی اللهجة الشیرازية، تتغیر بعض الکلمات مع الصوت الطويل (ا=ā) إلی کلمات مع الصوت القصیر (o = ُ ) مثلا بالا —> بالو (فوق)
2. فی اللهجة الشیرازية. ستسمعون (o ُ و u او) کثیر فی آخر الکلمات و الجُمل. سترون أمثله اکثر فی نص الکلیپ

لکن للاسف، هذه الایام، کثیر قد نسوا هذه اللهجة، خاصة الشباب، لم یعودو يتحدثون بهذه الطريقة

انتی بهذه الطریقة الصحیحة تتکلمین مثلنا، لماذا تتکلمی باللهجة اذن

1.من طرق الايجاد الکلمات فی اللغة الفارسية هی "مضاعفة" يراد بها تكرار أصل الكلمة أو شيء منه هو من الانواع المختلف (الکامل، الناقص و ...). "شیشه میشه" تم ایجادها بهذه الطریقة، کما تعلمون شیشه بمعنی "زجاج" و لکن "میشه" فی هذه العباره لیس لها معنی و دورها هو "تآکید" علی الجزء الاول من الکلمه یعني "شیشه".

3. "ها" او "ا" فی آخر الافعال هو دورها تآکید للجملة مثلا "دیر نکنی(ا)" {لا تتاخر}

“A separation” is the Oscar-winning Iranian movie directed by Asghar Farhadi, I’ve made a lesson based on its trailer, the Persian subnoscript along with Arabic and English ones and the link the movie will follow the lesson, there will be some notes on colloquial Persian at the end which has been made based on the dialogues of this movie.

🔴 1. Both نه and خِیر mean “no” and they can be attached together to make a more definite “NO”
🔵 2. “Haj Agha” (A Muslim man who has made a pilgrimage to Mecca) is a way to address a mature man who looks religious (bearded with Mohr’s Mark on his forehead. etc…). And you don’t need to be sure if he actually made a pilgrimage or not, he would take it as a compliment.
However you may unintentionally offend someone by calling him “Haj Agha” since he may not be a religious person. This happens especially in cities like Tehran where the percentage of religious people are less compared to other cities. So to be on the safe side, you can drop “Haj” and address a man simply as “Agha” if you’re not sure if he likes to be called that or not

من که می فهمم اون پدرمه
One important usage of که which is very common after personal pronouns is for emphasis and is not usually translated to the English relative pronoun “that”. It could be translated to “but”

من الان تکلیفم چی می شه؟
تکلیف کسی/چیزی چه بودن/شدن
تکلیف literally means “duty, task, obligation”, but the whole expression means “what will happen to sb/sth”

هیچ چی، بفرمایین سر زندگیتون
سر زندگی ، (at work) سرِ کار
First, don’t forget that there is an Ezafe between سر and the word after it, otherwise, the meaning would change. The meaning for سر in the above phrases and the phrases alike which you cannot easily find in the Persian dictionaries is “to be busy/ involved/ engaged with”.. it could be the contraction of سرگرم . to be engaged with something (سرگرم چیزی بودن)

The formula for making a “present progressive” sentence:

خانم and آقا are untranslatable in the above two sentence, Using polite or respectful terms such as “Ma’am” and “sir” would just make weird and unnatural English sentences which are not equivalent to the Persian ones. خانم and آقا are not always respectful noscripts to address a “woman” and “man”; they are neutral

اُفتاده is used figuratively here and cannot be translated easily. افتادن مردن and its different conjugations in the present and past tenses are common in Persian maybe because those who “die” usually “fall” at first!
The word "دیگر" ("دیگه" as pronounced in colloquial Persian) has several meanings. When used at the end of sentences (like the above sentence) it shows that the sentence is obviously true.

درست (و) حسابی is a two-word adjective and adverb. As an adjective it means “good, decent” and as an adverb it means “well, in a good manner”
