Caves or Beach?

In season 1, the disagreement between living in the caves versus staying on the beach is a stupidly blown up plot, considering both options are good so long as some survivors stayed on the beach/rotated between beach and caves.

If rescue came, it's not like the beach survivors would get on the boats ASAP and not tell the rescuers where they could find the remaining survivors. Drama for drama's sake in a television drama - go figure!

Anyway, I just wanted to ask what you think you would have done? Stayed on the beach or moved to the caves - or done a rotation of the two?

I'm a caves guy - with regular visits to the beach, but I wouldn't want to live on the beach.

The casting in Lost was amazing

I was really surprised by how well they cast the younger versions of some characters. They did such a great job!
Alex and Danielle look so much alike, and the child actors for Charlotte & Sawyer, Jack’s son David, young Ben, young Juliet and the sister were all perfect.
Huge appreciation to the casting team- they really nailed it. 👏

Someone knows the name of the song in sad moments? not the regular one, like the one that is when Linus talks about he´s daugther, the piano one, pretty sad.

If you could pick 3 or 5 leaders for season 1 who and why?

I’m doing a rewatch/first watch. I watch the first few season I wanna say 10 years ago so I don’t remember a whole lot. So I’m doing a rewatch. I’m on season 1. As we know Jack had kind of just became the leader. But as the season progress we see that it does take a toll on him. We see others emerging as well Sayid for an example. The two work well but what would be best is basically a board that consist of an uneven number so if they vote you have the 1 person who breaks the tie.
So if you could pick 3 or 5 people from only season 1. Who and why?
And bonus who would be the worst to lead.

"If I take him.... he will always be one of us"

Richard says this to Kate and co before accepting the injured young ben and saving him. It's my first watch (currently on s5 ep12). Why did Richard say taking ben would mean the death of his innocence, he'd never be the same, and he "will always be one of us"? Separately, what do ppl think of Richard? As of right now I see him as symbolizing perhaps the devil (could very well be wrong in this). This scene and Richard as a whole confuse and intrigue me. Thanks!

what are the stupidest theories you had when you were first watching lost?

for me, it was i thought the others were kind of like jack’s dad in early episodes, a hallucination thing. (or is he? vsauce music) i thought this because in the episode where jack and kate go out into the jungle to save claire and charlie ethan seems to pop out of nowhere and warn jack, and when he asks kate if she saw ethan she said no. jack also seemed unable to fight back at all, which i always thought was weird.

Rewatching for the first time since the finale and had some thoughts...

I was 15 when the show ended and was a huge fan at the time. Rewatching it now as an adult, and was surprised at what stood out to me this time around. I'm currently towards the end of Season 2.

\- Sawyer is by far the best character. His presence is magnetic and he has the most witty dialogue. I think as a kid a lot of it went over my head so I'm appreciating his characterization more.

\- Charlie and Jin are sooo problematic. The way Charlie obsesses over Claire and her baby is bizarre -- even in Season 1 when he was still supposed to be likable. And Jin is straight-up abusive. He orders Sun around, attacks Michael instead of trying to explain the watch situation, and in the latest episode I watched, he's ripping up Sun's garden and throwing things off the desk in a flashback.

\- Jack comes off so arrogant and very reckless to go on missions and put himself in danger all the time, considering he's the only doctor. At the same time, everyone else seems so helpless and dependent on him that I actually understand? I'm surprised no one else is able to step up except Locke, who's clearly unstable.

\- Shannon getting killed was so sad :( She was becoming so much more likable. I feel like there was more the writers could've done with her.

\- It's surprising that Kate doesn't want to stay on the island. From her flashbacks, it's clear she has nothing to go back to except being a fugitive, so you'd think she'd be disinterested in leaving.

\- Jack and Locke's positions on pushing the button in the Hatch seem flipped. I would think Jack would want to keep pushing the button because of the amount of evidence suggesting it's real. There was a guy in there explaining the system. There are videos from a credible institution (they have bases all over the island so they must've seemed legit) mentioning an "incident", and the Hatch walls literally attract metal. So it's bizarre that such a "scientific" man like Jack would be so willing to ignore all these info and think the whole thing is fake. It's more of a leap of faith to not push the button, which would better fit Locke. Like wouldn't he rather have faith that the island would protect him, vs subjecting his life to pushing a button? The characterization just seems inconsistent but maybe I'm missing something.

Brief thoughts from 2nd rewatch

I watched Lost for the first time as it aired, and then again maybe 10 years later. And now, maybe another decade on from that? Assuming I haven't borked the timeline!

Just want to say I really enjoy the show and still do. This time around, it's been a real eye opener.
I find most of the characters to be jarring, horrible communicators. They're either not communicating with each other at all about important stuff, doing so very poorly, or actively aggravating and inciting each other with every other breath. Which... I'm sure is great telly. Actually, this time round I'm watching it in my advanced age and finding it's more enjoyable if I think of those scenes a bit like reality tv. You know, like Fuckboy Island. Hard to look away, but paradoxically I'm covering my face with my blankets because of the secondhand embarassment.

None of that is bad, btw. I love Lost, and I'm watching it with my partner who is a first-time viewer and also enjoying it.
But I swear I didn't feel this way about the show on my previous watches... Anyone else have this experience?

This time around, i have thoroughly joined the "Charlie is insufferable" club. What a true piece of garbage he is. I've known junkies, and I'm from a colony... I tell you what, this chap is just a hateful wanker! It's quite surreal to think he was one of my favourites last time around. I mean... Dude is hot. Maybe I was just thirsty.

I would say more about the other characters but I think it's too much to go into.
I'll just say this, though. Our favourite this time around is Sayid. We both dislike Jack. I do this thing where I make my eyes go all wide and get up in my partners face like Jack, and it just ruins them. It's fantastic.

Love the show. Interesting rewatch this time. If anyone can make a "why are you like this?!" meme with Charlie, you will slay us. Thank you and glad Lost still has a community!

Lord of the Rings -> The Stand -> LOST

These are three of my favorite works of fiction. I remember reading the LOST was inspired by The Stand. (This seems most clear to me in Season 1 and would love to discuss how they could have kept closer to that feel). I also know that The Stand was inspired by Lord of the Rings. I’m trying to identify new things that have this same vibe. What do you think those commonalities are between these three? I think the thing that might be resonating most for me is “diverse group of seemingly ordinary people rise from their mundane lives to change and play a vital role in the battle of good vs evil.”
