Horror studies define horror as a clash between establishment and "other." The establishment are the ones who want to maintain the status quo, while the "other" strive to change it. The establishment derive their power from civilization, while "other" occupy wilderness. The clash usually happens once ones enter the field of influence of the other.
The power of the establishment is in knowledge rather than passion. Cold blood versus hot one. The establishment's religion is based on the Father Skies, while the "other's" on the Mother Earth and is pagan. One of the aspects of civilization that is intrinsic to the establishment is fire, versus the water pertaining to "other". The former use phallic symbols like sticks and knives rather than yonic, such as stones and water bodies, usually exploited by the latter. In fact, the "other" prefer dungeons and can easily attack blind members of the establishment there, while the establishment prefers the daylight and high places.
In the end, a member of the establishment either lives by exploiting their native sources of power or survives by becoming the "other." In the latter case, however, they cannot return to civilization anymore.
