Eight Treasures Unveiled festival is happening in Amsterdam. Rialto cinema shows 8 as old as the cinematography itself movies with limited showtimes over the course of winter. Movies that could’ve been lost forever, but thanks to Scorsese’s World Cinema Project, they have been restored in all their glory. For instance, the last copy of Chess of the Wind was literally discovered by chance at a flea market! I have so far seen 5, with the Parajanov’s The Colour of Pomegranates coming this Friday.
Insiang is a treasure trove. Not only it masterfully shows how women carry the weight of the world on their shoulders, but also how as long as your desires have hold over your values, others will have hold over you and eventually will overcome you. How even more you would yield the more you have yielded already. How the treatment you give will eventually catch up with you, even if the ones you gave it to are your own family. And the longer you linger, the bigger the chance you’ll stay on the sidelines. As one of the characters stayed: he didn’t have it in him to approach Insiang, and once he eventually did, it was too late. The guy didn’t even make it to the plot denoscription on Wikipedia, so I don’t even remember his name (Nanding?). What a fool, literally stayed on the sidelines.
