Nearly $4-million worth of stolen vehicles were recovered and more than 100 charges have been laid after an alleged car theft ring operating around Pearson Airport and run out of Quebec was busted.

Cops say the individuals charged are alleged to be responsible for more than 100 stolen vehicles in and around the airport.

The family of a man who received medical assistance in dying while out on a day pass from a Vancouver hospital psychiatric ward has launched a legal challenge alleging Canada’s current laws are unconstitutional because they fail to protect suicidal and mentally ill people.

The notice of civil claim filed Friday in British Columbia Supreme Court also alleges the 52-year-old’s MAID procedure two years ago was a wrongful death. It accuses Ellen Wiebe, the high-profile doctor who the suit claims helped him end his life, of alleged malpractice.

More than 50 Liberal Party members of parliament from Ontario came to a “consensus” during a conference call that Justin Trudeau must step down as prime minister, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.

That would represent about a third of the Liberal caucus, which has 153 seats in Canada’s House of Commons. However, there’s no formal mechanism for Liberal lawmakers to eject their leader or trigger a contest.

📈 Alberta's population boom is slowing but still outpacing the rest of Canada

After Alberta's population boomed through the first half of 2024, its growth slowed during the third quarter of this year.

But even while less people answered Alberta's call, the province's population is still growing more quickly than the rest of Canada.

As of Oct. 1, Statistics Canada recorded Alberta's population to be 4,931,601. That's roughly 43,000 more, or a 0.9 per cent increase, from the 4,888,723 recorded three months earlier. The pace of growth remains higher than the national rate, and tops any other province or territory.

💉Canada records 50,000 opioid overdose deaths since 2016

Health Canada reported a total of 49,105 "apparent opioid toxicity deaths" from the start of 2016 to June of 2024.

Fentanyl was involved in 79 percent of opioid deaths in 2024, a figure that has increased by 39 percent since 2016, the agency said.

A new report from RBC Economics says home affordability in Canada is improving, though strains remain.

RBC says home ownership costs as a percentage of median household income remain close to worst-ever levels, at 58.4 per cent in the third quarter of 2024.

The share of income a median Canadian household would need to cover mortgage payments, property taxes and utilities hit an all-time high of 63.8 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2023.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith will be in Washington for Donald Trump’s inauguration in January, attending a series of events over six days, including the swearing-in at the Capitol building and state society balls.

She will be making the case that affordable raw products from Canada, including oil imports from her province, allow for trillions of dollars in American wealth creation. She believes Mr. Trump’s promise of a 25-per-cent tariff on all Canadian goods is not an idle threat and will be put in place – even for a short period, in some form – after the incoming president takes office.

None of us can afford to have 25-per-cent tariffs on our products. It will be the overriding issue of next year, if it doesn’t get resolved.

'A shadow of its former self': Economists warn about Canada's manufacturing decline

Canada risks becoming “irrelevant” to global supply chains, with negative consequences for Canadians’ standard of living and productivity, without serious reform to revive its struggling manufacturing sector, National Bank of Canada economists warn.

They cite numerous factors for the decline, among them “structural economic shifts, insufficient investment, inadequate policy support, and pressures—both competitive and uncompetitive—from global markets.”

The consequences are clear: Canada’s manufacturing sector, measured as a percentage of gross domestic product, is tied with the U.K. for the smallest in the G7 at nine per cent, the report says. Since 2018, 15 of 18 manufacturing industries in Canada have reported negative growth.
