Chrystia Freeland pegged by some Liberal MPs as Justin Trudeau's successor if he resigns

Among the Liberal MPs publicly calling on Trudeau to step down, a small number have come forward to throw their support behind Freeland.

By design or by circumstance, her time of resignation has put her into the spotlight. And she appears to be the person around whom the caucus members can rally behind.

Ontario Liberal MP Chandra Arya said.

What a dumb move that would be.

'Let's pull the plug and solve this,' Danielle Smith says, calling for immediate federal election

When Premier Danielle Smith looks at Ottawa this time, as the federal Liberals desperately try to regroup, she sees “somebody who is trying to shuffle their way out of chaos.”

You can’t do that. The only way you can solve this kind of chaos is to get a mandate. It is to have an election. I think there’s a real danger if this just drags on and on and on for months when we’re right in the middle of a very serious threat from a biggest trading partner, the United States.

More than 50 Liberal MPs leave call with 'consensus' Justin Trudeau should step down

More than 50 Liberal Party members of parliament from Ontario came to a “consensus” during a conference call that Justin Trudeau must step down as prime minister, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.

That would represent about a third of the Liberal caucus, which has 153 seats in Canada’s House of Commons. However, there’s no formal mechanism for Liberal lawmakers to eject their leader or trigger a contest.

🇺🇸Trudeau appears to break silence on Trump ribbing

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau appears to have broken his silence and addressed comments made by Donald Trump encouraging Canada to become “our 51st state.”

Some information about Canada for Americans

Trudeau wrote on X Thursday afternoon above a video ahead of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver aired by the American news outlet NBC. The six-minute clip narrated by Tom Brokaw gives a broad overview of Canadian politics, landscapes and formative moments in the national memory.

This response is as weak as Trudeau.

📈 Alberta's population boom is slowing but still outpacing the rest of Canada

After Alberta's population boomed through the first half of 2024, its growth slowed during the third quarter of this year.

But even while less people answered Alberta's call, the province's population is still growing more quickly than the rest of Canada.

As of Oct. 1, Statistics Canada recorded Alberta's population to be 4,931,601. That's roughly 43,000 more, or a 0.9 per cent increase, from the 4,888,723 recorded three months earlier. The pace of growth remains higher than the national rate, and tops any other province or territory.

🇺🇸 Alberta Premier Danielle Smith will attempt to dissuade Trump from Canadian tariffs in Washington visit

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith will be in Washington for Donald Trump’s inauguration in January, attending a series of events over six days, including the swearing-in at the Capitol building and state society balls.

She will be making the case that affordable raw products from Canada, including oil imports from her province, allow for trillions of dollars in American wealth creation. She believes Mr. Trump’s promise of a 25-per-cent tariff on all Canadian goods is not an idle threat and will be put in place – even for a short period, in some form – after the incoming president takes office.

None of us can afford to have 25-per-cent tariffs on our products. It will be the overriding issue of next year, if it doesn’t get resolved.

Ms. Smith said.

'A shadow of its former self': Economists warn about Canada's manufacturing decline

Canada risks becoming “irrelevant” to global supply chains, with negative consequences for Canadians’ standard of living and productivity, without serious reform to revive its struggling manufacturing sector, National Bank of Canada economists warn.

They cite numerous factors for the decline, among them “structural economic shifts, insufficient investment, inadequate policy support, and pressures—both competitive and uncompetitive—from global markets.”

The consequences are clear: Canada’s manufacturing sector, measured as a percentage of gross domestic product, is tied with the U.K. for the smallest in the G7 at nine per cent, the report says. Since 2018, 15 of 18 manufacturing industries in Canada have reported negative growth.

Canada ends flagpoling for those seeking work and study permits at the border

Work and study permits will no longer be available for flagpolers at ports of entry in Canada.

Flagpolers are foreign nationals holding temporary resident status in Canada who leave the country and re-enter to access immigration services, such as work or study permits, at a port of entry rather than submitting a renewal application through Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) reports that more than 69,300 flagpolers were processed between April 1, 2023 and March 31, 2024 primarily in the Pacific, southern Ontario and Quebec regions.

Court hits pause on global streamers’ upcoming Canadian content payments

The Federal Court of Appeal says big streaming companies won’t have to pay for Canadian content until the court hears their appeal of a CRTC decision ordering them to pay.

In June, the CRTC said that foreign streamers must contribute five per cent of their annual Canadian revenues to a fund devoted to producing Canadian content, including local TV and radio news.

Big global streamers like Netflix and Disney Plus launched court challenges of that order, which the regulator made under the Online Streaming Act.
