CRTC considering banning Fox News from Canadian cable packages
The CRTC has opened a public consultation on a complaint from an LGBTQ rights group asking the broadcast regulator to ban Fox News from cable packages in Canada.
Egale Canada first said in April it would file an application asking the CRTC to ban Fox News over “false and horrifying claims” made by host Tucker Carlson regarding transgender individuals.
The group published an open letter following a March appearance on Tucker Carlson Tonight. The group said the Fox News “coverage aimed to provoke hatred and violence against 2SLGBTQI communities, particularly those who are Two Spirit, trans, nonbinary and gender non-conforming (2STNBGN).”
The letter also accused the segment of stoking resentment against 2STNBGN individuals through misinformation “including that trans people are given preferential treatment in employment and other opportunities.”
Carlson has been fired from Fox since Egale went public with its request in early April.

Canada considers expelling Chinese diplomats for targeting MP
Canada has said it is considering expelling Chinese diplomats after Beijing was accused of targeting a member of parliament and his family. Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly summoned China's ambassador on Thursday to discuss the issue.
It follows a report that Canada's spy agency believes China sought details about the MP's relatives in an effort to deter "anti-China positions". The politician had previously accused China of human rights abuses.
On Thursday, Ms Joly said that she asked her deputy minister to tell China's ambassador, Cong Peiwu, that Canada will not tolerate interference in its affairs.

🚫Meta set to block news on Facebook, Instagram from Canadian users
A representative for Meta says the tech giant has a team that is working toward blocking news for its Canadian users on Facebook and Instagram. The content-blocking team is preparing to end the availability of news on those social media platforms should the Liberal government’s online news bill pass.
Meta will not remove other pages on Facebook unrelated to news, and Canadian users will still be able to access pages for governments, politicians and emergency services.
The company believes it is forced to make this decision because it does not agree with the proposed online news legislation, which is currently at the committee stage in the Senate.
If passed, Bill C-18 would require tech giants to pay Canadian media companies for linking to or otherwise repurposing their content online.

🏠 Vancouver's Empty Homes Tax could be lowered from 5% to 3%
More than a year after the previous makeup of Vancouver City Council approved a hike of the municipal Empty Homes Tax to 5%, staff with the City of Vancouver are now recommending that the hike starting in 2023 be rescinded and return to its previous rate of 3%.
📈Ever since the EHT went into effect in 2017, the tax rate has been increased three times from 1% to 5%, while fewer properties have been declared vacant.
This recommendation is based on the findings of an analysis by City staff and their third-party consultants.
Analysts acknowledge that while further increases to the EHT rate beyond 3% could potentially encourage more owners to convert their properties from vacant to occupied and generate more revenue for the City, it can also result in a spike in false declarations.
