📉 Canadian workers' purchasing power fell by most in a decade last year
A new analysis suggests Canadian workers' purchasing power in 2022 dropped by the most in over a decade as surging consumer prices far outpaced wage growth.
Oxfam Canada, a non-profit organization, says workers suffered the equivalent of a 3.4 per cent pay cut last year and that purchasing power eroded by an average of $1,992.
Oxfam says the wage decline in real terms was less severe in 2021, when it fell by 0.4 per cent.

🚫Meta set to block news on Facebook, Instagram from Canadian users
A representative for Meta says the tech giant has a team that is working toward blocking news for its Canadian users on Facebook and Instagram. The content-blocking team is preparing to end the availability of news on those social media platforms should the Liberal government’s online news bill pass.
Meta will not remove other pages on Facebook unrelated to news, and Canadian users will still be able to access pages for governments, politicians and emergency services.
The company believes it is forced to make this decision because it does not agree with the proposed online news legislation, which is currently at the committee stage in the Senate.
If passed, Bill C-18 would require tech giants to pay Canadian media companies for linking to or otherwise repurposing their content online.

🏥 Ontario passes bill that expands private delivery of health care
Ontario has passed a health-reform bill that will allow more private clinics to offer certain publicly funded surgeries and procedures in an effort to cut long wait lists for care.
There are about 900 private clinics currently operating across the province, the vast majority of them for diagnostic imaging and testing.
The moves are part of the government’s plan to decrease wait times and reduce a massive backlog of surgeries, which stands at more than 200,000 procedures.
Hospitals have said they are concerned about losing staff to private clinics.

🇨🇳Canadian diplomat expelled from China in retaliation for similar move by Ottawa
▪️China has declared a Canadian diplomat as "persona non grata" in retaliation for Ottawa's expulsion of a Chinese consular official.
On Tuesday, China's Foreign Ministry posted a statement saying Jennifer Lynn Lalonde, consul of the Consulate General of Canada in Shanghai, has been asked to leave before May 13, and that China reserves the right to further react.
▪️On Monday, Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly issued a statement that Canada had declared Toronto-based diplomat Zhao Wei as "persona non grata.''

🏠 Vancouver's Empty Homes Tax could be lowered from 5% to 3%
More than a year after the previous makeup of Vancouver City Council approved a hike of the municipal Empty Homes Tax to 5%, staff with the City of Vancouver are now recommending that the hike starting in 2023 be rescinded and return to its previous rate of 3%.
📈Ever since the EHT went into effect in 2017, the tax rate has been increased three times from 1% to 5%, while fewer properties have been declared vacant.
This recommendation is based on the findings of an analysis by City staff and their third-party consultants.
Analysts acknowledge that while further increases to the EHT rate beyond 3% could potentially encourage more owners to convert their properties from vacant to occupied and generate more revenue for the City, it can also result in a spike in false declarations.

📈Calgary sees record annual population growth
A City of Calgary report, published Monday, estimated Calgary's population as of April 1 to be 1,389,200, which represents a 3.0 per cent annual population increase since April 2022.
According to the city, that addition of about 40,600 people is the greatest annual population growth Calgary has ever seen, based on the existing data.
The city's chief economist attributes the growth to the government's immigration plans, as well as the relative affordability of housing compared to other major cities of the country.
The population growth is expected to continue over the next five years.

Automatic organ and tissue donation set to be debated in New Brunswick
The New Brunswick Legislature is expected to debate Thursday a proposed switch to a "deemed consent" system for organ and tissue donation.
Under the proposed changes, introduced Wednesday by the Official Opposition and given first reading, all adults, who are not exempt, will be considered for organ and tissue donation — unless they opt out.
The Act to Amend the Human Tissue Gift Act could increase donations and "significantly diminish" wait times, said Jean-Claude D'Amours, the Liberal health critic and MLA for Edmundston-Madawaska Centre.
As it stands, New Brunswickers can give their consent for organ and tissue donation when they apply for or renew their medicare card, by checking the appropriate box.
Nova Scotia is currently the only jurisdiction in Canada that has adopted a presumed consent model. The law change was passed in April 2019, and took effect in January 2021, once supports were put in place to handle the anticipated increase in donations.

Canadian military deployed to aid in fighting Alberta wildfires and recovery efforts
Thousands have been evacuated from their homes, and several oil and gas operations have been shut down in the province. The federal government approved Alberta's request for assistance, and the Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, announced the deployment of armed forces to support firefighting efforts.
The wildfires have sparked concerns about disaster management ahead of a provincial election on May 29. While some oil and gas companies have resumed production due to cooler weather, forecasts indicate temperatures will increase again over the weekend. Alberta's Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Services warned against complacency despite recent weather conditions.

Computer model projections are showing the heat wave will bring parts of British Columbia and Alberta high above average temperatures for this time of year. The heat will likely extend into parts of the Yukon as well.
New fires may start, given the drying conditions and potential for dry lightning strikes.
