Money quote: "When you shoot black and white film, it’s tough to get the same effect as shooting color. B&W film records the colors of light as white, and color filters block some wavelengths from being captured. When taking pictures, they act as sunglasses, filtering out specific frequencies to not distract from your picture’s quality. The process often makes objects appear clearer because their background has been eliminated, along with all those pesky reflections that can get in people’s shots without asking. Colored lens filters can help to ensure objects remain well defined in images while still providing some vibrancy for mood shots or scenery backgrounds."

Money quote: "It's effortless to commit to subnoscriptions without seeing the cumulative monthly and yearly impact they can have. Many of the subnoscriptions I sign up for reoccur monthly, and with each renewing on a different day, their cumulative weight becomes thinly spread out across the month. In that way, they become ambient expenses - $5 here, $10 there - and I can quickly lose sight of how many subnoscriptions I have and their total cost. This exercise helped me look at the total cost of my subnoscriptions across a year to help me make more informed choices about the services I want to keep. It's easy to keep a $5/month subnoscription hanging around, but when you conceptualize it as a $60 expense relative to the dozens of other subnoscriptions you're maintaining, you begin to see things in a new light."

Money quote: "Their translation of “The Brothers Karamazov,” published in 1990, was so well received that a full-page review in The New York Times Book Review declared, “The truth is out at last.” Their edition of the novel, it continued, “finally gets the musical whole of Dostoyevsky’s original.”
Since then, Pevear and Volokhonsky, he now 81 and she 78, have become reigning translators of Russian literature, publishing an average of one volume per year, including classics by Tolstoy and Chekhov, as well as lesser-known books and works by contemporary writers like the Nobel laureate Svetlana Alexievich. In their reach, the couple are the Constance Garnett of our time, making vast swaths of Russia’s written word available to the West, for which they have received both adulation and full-throated condemnation.
Their latest project is a translation of Mikhail Saltykov-Shchedrin’s “Foolsburg: The History of a Town,” published earlier this month by Vintage. To Anglophone readers, to whom the book is largely unknown, it will be a corrective to the only previous translation available still in print, from 1980, as well as an argument for the book’s Swiftian wit and its relevance to Russia and the United States today. There is even a character in it named Trump.

Personalmente, preferisco Borges.
Money quote: "Dall’oscurità, Funes continuava a parlare.

Money quote: "Pavel Durov’s arrest in France for allegedly failing to control criminal content on Telegram, the Russian-born billionaire’s messaging app, has sparked an intense debate about the limits of free speech and the responsibilities of big tech firms to moderate their platforms.
Financially speaking, however, cryptocurrency matters as much to Telegram’s bottom line as messaging.

Money quote: "We believe neurological connectivity is achieved when a retailer, brand or service creates a strong psychological and emotional response that operates on a subconscious level for the consumer in a way that is typically not readily understood nor necessarily recognized by the consumer. As various research studies in the field of neuroscience have found, when people encounter an elevated experience, their brains release many chemicals. One in particular that has attracted a lot of attention is dopamine, which leads to feelings of euphoria, self-satisfaction and well-being, and which can also actually lead to addiction.
Consumer connectivity is no longer about merely the physical or practical connection of products or services with consumers. This, too, is simply a point of entry. Far more important is the mind connection, or neurological connectivity."

Money quote: "The stereotypical “friend group” that’s constantly depicted on small (and big) screens seems to have seeped into our consciousness to the point that we hold our own social lives up to this fictional standard. It usually looks something like this: A group of pals who have known each other a long time spend a lot of time together (usually in coffee shops, restaurants, and bars), travel together, make big decisions and attend major life events together, and generally rely on each other constantly.
Not only is this mythical crew of close-knit pals—popularized by the Carries, Charlottes, Samanthas, and Mirandas of the pop-culture world—an inaccurate depiction of reality, but some experts say it’s doing a lot of us more harm than good. “People are constantly feeling like they’re not living up to their own friendship expectations, and that there’s something wrong with them because they don’t have that core group,” Elizabeth Earnshaw, LMFT, Philadelphia-based therapist and author of ’Til Stress Do Us Part, tells SELF.

L'AI produce arte oppure no?
Money quote: "I think the same underlying principle applies to visual art, although it’s harder to quantify the choices that a painter might make. Real paintings bear the mark of an enormous number of decisions. By comparison, a person using a text-to-image program like dall-e enters a prompt such as “A knight in a suit of armor fights a fire-breathing dragon,” and lets the program do the rest. (The newest version of dall-e accepts prompts of up to four thousand characters—hundreds of words, but not enough to describe every detail of a scene.) Most of the choices in the resulting image have to be borrowed from similar paintings found online; the image might be exquisitely rendered, but the person entering the prompt can’t claim credit for that."

Mah.
Money quote: "For Walz, $135,000 represents a relatively small chunk of what he can expect to earn in retirement. The Wall Street Journal estimates the Walzes’ retirement savings at more than $1 million, meaning that the early withdrawal likely represented somewhere in the neighborhood of 10% of the retirement fund.
What’s more, Walz’s situation is a little different than most Americans’. He can expect ample pension income in retirement thanks to his years working as a teacher, national guardsman and politician — some of which he’s already collecting. Of Walz and his wife’s roughly $300,000 in 2023 income, about $135,000 came from pensions or annuities."

Money quote: "Firstly, users can take a clinically-validated hearing test. The hearing test uses your AirPods and iPhone, and can be conducted by a user in under five times. The result of your hearing test can be viewed securely in the Health app.
If hearing loss is detected, the hearing aid mode is then available to use. The AirPods will make it easier to hear sounds from the world around you. A custom hearing profile is automatically applied when listening to audio, like music or podcasts.
The hearing aid feature is currently making its way through the FDA and other regulatory bodies. Apple said the functionality will be available in more than 100 countries. The feature will be enabled through a free software update coming later this year to AirPods Pro 2."

Money quote: "This isn’t a new observation: in fact, it is a direct expression of the theories advanced by 19th-century American economist Thorstein Veblen, whose 1899 work The Theory of the Leisure Class introduced the seemingly paradoxical idea of such desirable luxuries—known today simply as “Veblen goods”—and the behavior which leads us to prioritize them over more sensible uses of our money.
And prioritize them we do: The luxury market is forecast to reach a valuation of €2.5 trillion ($2.8 trillion) by 2030, up from €1.5 trillion now, according to consulting firm Bain & Company."

The More This Rolex Costs, the More You Want It. Here's Why
A 125-year-old theory explains why humans want luxury items even more when the prices go up. Blame social media—and ubiquitous counterfeits—for making it even worse.
