Brillante e fulminante saggio di Susan Sontag su Anna Banti e il suo romanzo "Artemisia", ma anche sulla guerra, Firenze violata, i tedeschi che fanno saltare i ponti mentre si ritirano, la casa che crolla e distrugge tra le altre cose il manoscritto del romanzo (che Banti riscriverà nei tre anni successivi) e una serie di altre cose terribili e meravigliose.

Letture per la domenica

Forse è arrivato il momento che ci chiediamo davvero come saremmo se non ci fosse stata la Commedia umana di Honoré de Balzac. Vivremmo un mondo povero, più piccolo, privo di realismo nello sguardo e nell'intenzione. Eppure, di tutta la sua opera, se anche ne abbiamo letto qualcosa è solo poca cosa. Peccato.

Money quote: "Se Balzac è sconfinato dal punto di vista delle pagine scritte, il suo genere non è il poema bensì il romanzo di costume e la satira sociale. Per romanzo sociale s’intende quel romanzo dove la descrizione dei tipi umani di un ambiente diventa preminente rispetto a qualsiasi altro aspetto: non abbiamo, cioè, il grande affresco storico a entrare nelle pagine di Balzac, come per esempio nell’Ivanhoe o nei Miserabili; anche se in alcuni suoi romanzi, come il colonello Chabert, sono forti i richiami alla Rivoluzione e al periodo del terrore.
