These are the findings of the international journalistic network "Lost in Europe".

Unaccompanied child refugees arrived in Europe between 2021 and 2023 and were under the care of the authorities. However, their current whereabouts are unknown.

If such refugees arrive in Germany, they are registered at the initial reception centre and distributed to youth welfare institutions. They are taken care of there, but sometimes young people run away and eventually disappear completely from the authorities' view. In Germany, over 2,000 unaccompanied minors have "disappeared" in this way over 2 years.

Where did they go?

▪️Firstly, the study identified significant shortcomings in collecting data on missing unaccompanied child refugees. Of the responsible authorities in 31 European countries, only 15 responded to the requests of the journalistic investigation.

▪️Furthermore, young people often simply leave their place of residence in one country and move to another, for example, closer to acquaintances or relatives. But this is not reflected in the system. In Italy and Austria, more than 20,000 children and adolescents were unaccounted for, and in Greece and Spain, no statistics are kept at all.

▪️In Brussels, they talk about a "broken" system. Currently, there are simply no common European requirements for registering and exchanging information on the fate of unaccompanied child refugees.
