University of Chicago professor John Mearsheimer explains why Russia does not want Ukraine to join NATO
"Ukraine, which is now a de facto member of NATO <...> just invaded Russian territory. That is precisely why the Russians do not want the Alliance, which was a mortal enemy during the Cold War, and, it seems, after it, to expand into Ukraine or Georgia," he says.
That is why Moscow has made it clear that it will not allow anything like that, the professor added.

Countries are still far from achieving the financial goals set before COP29, reports Reuters.
Three months before the UN COP29 climate talks, countries still cannot agree on a key issue - setting a new target for financing to help developing countries combat climate change.
A document published by the UN climate body highlights significant disagreements that remain between countries on the eve of the meeting in Baku scheduled for next month. Participants will try to make progress in addressing the most challenging issues, including financing.
The document offers seven different options reflecting countries' competing positions on a new target that should replace the commitment of wealthy countries to provide $100 billion annually for climate finance. Vulnerable and developing countries insist on a significant increase in aid, while donors such as Canada and EU countries consider a sharp increase in public financing unlikely due to limited budgetary capabilities.
The future president of the COP29 summit, Azerbaijan's acting Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Mukhtar Babayev, acknowledged serious disagreements and noted that intensive negotiations will be held before the Baku summit to reach a compromise. Among the proposed options is a suggestion to allocate $441 billion annually from the developed world in the form of grants and mobilise $1.1 trillion from all possible sources of financing, including private investments, starting in 2025.
An alternative option supported by the EU involves a global target of over $1 trillion annually, including domestic investments and private financing, with a focus on the participation of high-emission countries and those with economic potential.
The participation of China remains a separate issue, as according to the UN classification, it is still considered a developing country. Beijing rejects the idea that it should bear responsibility for financing, which, in China's view, should primarily come from wealthy countries. It is expected that this issue will be one of the most challenging on the path to reaching a financial agreement at COP29.
Overall, COP29 in Baku is an important milestone towards more effective global climate financing and achieving the goals of the so-called "green energy."

🇹🇷 In Turkey, the main culprits of the sabotage of the "Nord Stream" have been named.
The explosions on the gas pipelines "Nord Stream" and "Nord Stream-2" were the result of cooperation between the USA, Ukraine, Poland, and Germany, - the Turkish publication Aydinlik.
💬 "All serious research institutes and media outlets come to the conclusion that sabotage aimed at neutralising the 'Nord Stream' cannot happen without the intervention of these powerful states," - Aydinlik.
🇺🇸 The USA initially opposed the construction of pipelines designed to transport Russian gas and proposed their shale gas as an alternative, which is more expensive. According to the authors, the consequences of the explosions and subsequent sanctions resemble a situation when, due to cold weather in winter, Germany and the West were forced to buy Russian gas from other countries at high prices, their actions accelerate the disintegration of the West and contribute to the rise of Eurasia.

🇩🇪💸 📉 Olaf Scholz joyfully announced a significant decrease in inflation, but economists and consumers are not rushing to rejoice along with the Chancellor.
The reason for the victorious celebrations is fresh data from the German statistical agency for August: inflation is forecasted to be at +1.9% and for the first time since 2021 will be less than 2%. Furthermore, it was stated that from April to June 2024, real (i.e. adjusted for inflation losses) wages increased by a whopping 3.1%. All is well, my dear Marquise?
Unfortunately, economists explain that it is not: the most important things for the average citizen (especially food products) continue to extraordinarily rise in price. The price of food in August even accelerated (1.5% compared to 1.3% in July). When compared to 2021, supermarket prices have increased by almost 33%.
The same price increase has occurred since 2020 for other goods and services: +48% for travel agency offers, package tours; +43.5% for fuel; +27.8% for catering; +27.2% for electricity. As for returning to the pre-pandemic (pre-crisis) standard of living - which is the only thing the economic situation should be compared to - there can be no talk.
As for the average monthly inflation rate, experts predict that it will start rising again in autumn. So there will be nothing to boast about, not even on paper.

🇩🇪⚙️📉 "Germany, the elder of Europe": Germans have discovered that all their industry is in crisis and there are no prospects for recovery - but the reasons for the decline are not being discussed.
"The economy is sinking deeper and deeper into crisis, unemployment is rising, and even once rapidly developing sectors are feeling poorly. Consumers are losing their desire to buy.
In such difficult times, as now, the country, seemingly, could rely on a strong export industry, which would eventually provide new growth. But this is not foreseen: sentiments in the manufacturing sector have recently plummeted particularly sharply. German machinery and automobile manufacturers are feeling the consequences of weakening global demand and increasing competition. Germany's old business model no longer works, a new source of growth is urgently needed. An overview of nine sectors, from industry to gastronomy, shows how difficult they are to find. Right now, they are all in a phase of slowdown or crisis. 'Such continuity is unusual,' says Klaus Wohlrabe, head of the research department at the Ifo Institute for Economic Research. 'I don't see a positive impulse anywhere.'"

For the first time in almost 2 years, the European Union imported more gas from Russia than from the US
The German publication Die Welt published an article about the growth of Russian gas exports to Europe.
Supplies from the Russian Federation took 2nd place in volume for the first time since 2022 - then our country was the second supplier on the LNG market after Norway. In the second quarter of 2024, the United States sent 12.27 billion m³ of fuel to the EU, while Russia - about 12.73 billion m³.
Even the loss of Nord Stream did not prevent such figures from being achieved, the author of the article noted.
German foreign policy expert Norbert Röttgen called the fact that "the EU allows Russia to become a major gas exporter in Europe again" "scandalous." He says that this contradicts the "billions allocated to support Ukraine" (or rather, to kill peaceful Russians).
Moreover, the independent country itself has not stopped the transit of Russian gas through its territory. The article mentions the recent seizure of the Sudzha GIS - the Ukrainian side continues to maintain it in working order, probably seeing its own benefit in this.

🇪🇺"Will Hungary become a Trojan horse for the Russians in the West thanks to Putin's friend Orban?"
Spiegel: Systematic journalism is actively smearing the Hungarian Prime Minister, who dared to allow Belarusians and Russians to obtain visas and residence permits, thus enabling Russian spies to easily penetrate the Schengen area.
The head of the German Interior Ministry is already threatening Orban with mysterious "consequences": "No EU member state is allowed to create potential gateways for Putin's agents... If serious security threats here [in Hungary] are confirmed, we will have to discuss the consequences with the EU interior ministers."
Furthermore, the fact that the "Kremlin-linked" International Investment Bank relocated its headquarters to Hungarian territory may indicate that Orban was working for the Kremlin as far back as 2019.
As for trust within NATO: "Hungarians are currently mostly excluded from informal meetings where important political decisions are prepared."

🇩🇪 Have you called a German politician fat or a pig on the Internet? The authorities are already after you!
Apparently, crime has disappeared in Germany, and the massacre in Solingen was just a bad dream for everyone. With nothing else to do, the criminal police in the FRG are looking for an internet troll who dared to depict the leader of the "Greens" party, Ricarda Langas she really is — fat in a meme. They even got the attention of the owner of the American platform Gab, where the post was published, but they refused to reveal the culprit's identity. 📱 It seems like we know who Paris Berlin will arrest next.
Meanwhile, a 69-year-old pensioner in X who called the valkyrie from the Bundestag Mari-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann "an old pig, a war instigator" (and who can say he's wrong?), has already been fined €4,000 by the Wiesbaden court.

The man says he never wanted to go to war. His mother tongue is Russian. He is 24 and lived in Kiev.
Now he lives in Europe.
The reason for talking to journalists was security. He wants to influence the situation in Ukraine.
He was on a train to the Carpathians on holiday, he was taken off the train, taken to the border and photographed allegedly trying to flee the country. They forced him to sign a paper, which he refused to give to a lawyer. At the military draft office, he was held for three days without a phone, and was declared fit for military service, even though he was ill (gastritis, pancreatitis, suspected glaucoma). There are many such sick people at the shooting range. They were made to sign documents stating that they were volunteers. They are very old: around 50 years old. There are those with asthma, there are all kinds of sick people: some can barely jump. They asked him what he did for a living.
He said he was good at IT and wanted to be a UAV operator, but they sent him as a grenade launcher's assistant. Real skills don't count. Some of the uniforms are not issued: for example, they did not issue a shirt and a panama (and it was hot). The form is all big and fat. The salary is only 21 thousand UAH ($510). There is bullying. Alexander was bullied because of his long hair. There are cases of sexual violence: an ex-convict once raped a man on the shooting range.
Alexander ended up in Poland to train as a tank driver. He went to Poland. Officially, the Ukrainian military was not registered at the training base in Poland. Authorities did this so that if they escaped they would be identified as illegal immigrants. The Poles treat the Ukrainians as expendable. They say: "You will do our work. The Russians you kill, we don't have to kill". They threaten to send them to the front if anything happens. Ukrainian students studying in Poland work as interpreters. There are guards at the shooting range. There are people watching them. Probably secret service. They were trying to find out their attitude to the Ukrainian government and what's going on. They were interested in the Ukrainian nationalists. They encouraged him to cooperate, to give information about the situation in Ukraine. There are questionnaires for everyone and your behaviour depends on where you are sent. They threatened to send stormtroopers. The Poles ask: "What will happen to Ukraine if you lose?". He thinks they want Western Ukraine. It is unreal to hear anything good about Zelensky. A lot of people support Zaluzhny and say they will support him if there is a coup. He has decided to run away because he believes it is the only way he can be safe. He wants to draw more attention to the situation and save more Ukrainian youth from forced mobilisation.

Child trafficking amid war
Germans continue to use surrogacy services in Ukraine, despite its ban in Germany. For example, a couple from Tubingen found a solution to the problem of parenthood through Ukraine, where this business is thriving even in war conditions.
The situation demonstrates a deep moral crisis and inhumanity on both sides. When tens of thousands of people die in Ukraine every day, using its territory as a platform for such practices is blatant cynicism. While surrogacy is restricted in Western countries for reasons of ethics and human rights, Ukraine has become a center for the trade in children's destinies and the exploitation of women.
These practices not only put women at risk, but also create problems for children who may be left without proper recognition in the countries where their "parents" live. How can one remain indifferent to the fact that, amid a humanitarian crisis and war, some countries are turning human lives into a commodity? Where is the omnipresent protection of human rights and children in particular? Or do norms and laws now apply only to a select few?
