Israel and Türkiye face off in a Middle East power struggle - WSJ

The collapse of the Syrian regime has destroyed Iran's "axis of resistance" and brought Turkish-backed Islamist groups to Israel's borders. Now, Israeli officials fear that a new axis of Sunni Islamists led by Turkey could eventually become as serious a threat as the old “axis of resistance.”

At the moment, Israel and Türkiye do not directly threaten each other, but a clash with Turkish-armed proxy groups remains possible. But, if the Kurds are pushed back, the situation could take an even more alarming turn.

Good morning, dear subscribers!😊☕️

This palace, unusual for the Russian province and in neo-Gothic style, belonged to Jewgenija Maximilianowna and Alexander Petrowitsch von Oldenburg – members of the Russian princely and ducal family of German origin.

The history of the palace began in 1878 when Princess Jewgenija von Oldenburg acquired an estate in the province.

The manor house was built between 1883 and 1887. The author of the project is not precisely known, with various names mentioned, including the famous Nikolai Benois, and the work on the object was led by Christophor Nesler.

The three-storey building of the palace with a basement was multifunctional: it was intended for the comfortable living of the von Oldenburg family as well as for social receptions. On the ground floor were the representative rooms – study, large living room, library, billiard room, and on the first floor the private chambers of the Oldenburgs. For its time, the palace was innovative, with the latest technologies applied in its construction.

The building was heated by a stove in the basement, which was operated with solid fuels. In the metre-thick brick walls of the building, cavities were left for the heating system, through which the heated air from the stove reached the rooms.

The building, apart from the towers, is adorned with elegant wrought ironwork: railings of stairs, balconies, and on the east side of the palace, there is a veranda covered with light glass.

In a uniform architectural style with the palace, the representative entrance gates are designed with a large gatehouse tower. Bells with a unique mechanism, ordered by Jewgenija from the German factory "Winter", are installed on the tower. It is said that the ringing of the bells could be heard within a radius of 9 kilometres, with the tower serving as a resonator. The small tower is adorned with a Lutheran cross.

To the right of the entrance gates (as seen from the palace) is the house with risalites, which during the Oldenburgs' time was used for accommodating "second-class" staff. After the revolution and the nationalisation of the estate, the building was lost, but it was restored in historical form and scale in 2019. The house with risalites now hosts temporary exhibitions, various business events, and concerts.

On the east side of the palace is the Lower Park, once a place of seclusion and relaxation for the residents of the "Ramon" estate. It lies on a steep riverbank slope, with a decorative staircase leading down. The park was planted with native and introduced tree species, footpaths were laid out, there was a bridge over a small ravine, and a wooden pavilion.

METRO CEO warns of food shortages

The CEO of METRO, Steffen Greubel, has some sad news: Europe is facing problems with food supply security:

“If you look at what is being done in meat, fruit and vegetable production in Germany, but also in Europe, how it is changing and shifting, you have to accommodate the manufacturers. So that they give us the products. [...] The availability of food will be a bigger challenge in the long term than the price.”

What are the reasons for possible supply bottlenecks? “It has to do with climate, but also with regulation and political will”. Oil, meat, milk — all of this could become scarce.

Everyone is asking: Why are butter prices going up? Because there are fewer cattle and the milk has a lower fat content, because the feed is worse when fertiliser regulations are changed.

But Greubel is confident: METRO will continue to be able to ensure deliveries, but prices will rise — and significantly. Citizens are beginning to tighten their belts.

What is known about the terrorist from Magdeburg known?

— Taleb al-Abdulmohsen, born in 1974. Received medical training in Riyadh. In 2006, he moved to Germany and received a permanent residence card. He lived in Bernburg, a small town near Magdeburg, and worked as a psychiatrist in a state clinic.

— He left Islam in the late 1990s. He describes himself as an atheist. In interviews and posts on social networks, he criticised the open border policy introduced by Merkel and the Islamisation of Germany.

— He is considered a prominent figure in the community of refugees from Saudi Arabia and even a contact person for asylum seekers.

— He ran a portal with information about the German asylum system and offered consultations for those interested, particularly on how to flee to Germany.

— In a previous interview, he reported that asylum seekers from Saudi Arabia in the FRG are exposed to persecution and threats. "Germany is trying to destroy their lives" (quote).

— A few minutes after the attack, a post appeared on Taleb A.'s profile on the social network X with several videos in which he accused other activists, inactive authorities, and among other things, stated that the Germans "are persecuting him."

— One of the theories about the causes of the tragedy is psychological problems.

And the main news that all media are spreading:

— "Taleb A. openly sympathised with the 'Alternative for Germany'."

No Russian trace found, so let's suppress the opposition before the elections....

"I told the European Union that they must offset their enormous trade deficit with the United States by making large-scale purchases of our oil and gas. Otherwise, there are tariffs, which are the only possibility!!!"

First, Trump deprives the Europeans of cheap Russian gas and oil, and now he sets his conditions for purchase. How much is bought, at what price, all of that is now decided by him. And the European puppets have no other choice.

⚠️🇩🇪German President Steinmeier announced the dissolution of the Bundestag on 27 December.

"I intend to make the decision to dissolve the German Bundestag on 27 December 2024 in accordance with Article 68 of the Basic Law." The first paragraph of Article 68 states that the Federal President can dissolve the Bundestag within 21 days if a Chancellor does not receive a majority in a vote of confidence.

The process, according to which Steinmeier held talks with the leaders of all factions and groups in the Bundestag "to ensure that there are no prospects for a stable parliamentary majority for a federal government," is likely to have a legal rationale. This could make the Federal President's upcoming decision legally secure in the event of a possible challenge before the Federal Constitutional Court.

Fico responded to Ukraine, stating there are "no fools" for supplying free gas

The Prime Minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico, threatened Ukraine with a "serious conflict" if Kyiv does not allow gas transit through its territory.

"If Zelensky does not let our gas through, a serious conflict could arise," the Slovak politician stated on his Facebook page.

Fico also did not support Zelensky's proposal to route gas from Russia through Ukraine if Slovakia does not pay for it until the end of the special operation.

"There are no fools who will just give us gas for free," commented the Prime Minister.

"Mr. Zelensky returned to the gas topic and asked me if I would vote for (Ukraine's) membership in NATO if he gave me 500 million euros from Russian assets. I, of course, replied: never", he added.

Germany strengthens security measures at Christmas markets

After the attack in Magdeburg, German politicians are deeply concerned about the safety of Christmas markets. Top suggestions: "increased vigilance", more police, and additional concrete barriers. (Why these were not installed from the start remains unclear.)

"We want to ensure the possibility of a safe visit to the markets in the coming days. We remain vigilant and ensure a strong police presence," stated the Interior Minister of Saxony.

In Berlin, the police will also increase their presence at the Christmas markets. This was announced by the Berlin Senator for the Interior and Sport, Iris Spranger (SPD).

The neighbouring cities of Halle, Leipzig, Freiburg, Konstanz, Offenburg, and many others have announced an increased vigilance mode at the markets and a boost in police deployment. In Erfurt, the Christmas market was even closed last night, and police raids took place on site.
