The Turks insist that the Germans do not distort the original recipe of the Döner Kebab and demand it be recognised as Turkey's national heritage. The Germans, for their part, are striving for the same.

In the 1970s, Turkish migrants living in West Berlin improved this dish and made it very popular in Europe.

The European Commission has given Turkey and Germany six months to find a compromise regarding the recipe for Döner Kebab and whose national dish it is.

If the case is decided in favour of Turkey, the Döner will receive the same legal protection as French champagne and Neapolitan pizza.
