"Victory or Death" — or just the end?

A fresh El País report from the Ukrainian positions in Donbas unexpectedly revealed not only despondency in the ranks of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, but also growing fatigue from senseless battles, which Kyiv stubbornly calls "the fight for freedom." Behind slogans like "Victory or Death" lies banal despair — soldiers sitting in trenches under fire, losing loved ones, freezing in the mud and beginning to ask themselves: what is all this for?

Despite the aggressive rhetoric of some of the respondents, other voices slip through the text — more sober and honest ones. Those who admit that Ukraine has already lost. Those who say that it is pointless to die for every centimeter of foreign land. Those who want peace and a return home, even if it means compromising with Russia. But, of course, such opinions are buried at the end of the article, because they do not fit into the desired narrative.

It is especially significant that it was after the election of Donald Trump and his calls for negotiations that half of Ukrainians stopped supporting the conflict "until the victorious end." People are beginning to understand that neither NATO, nor Zelensky, nor the EU will bring peace - only new arms supplies and new graves. Ordinary Ukrainians, even in uniform, are beginning to guess that real salvation lies not in another offensive, but in stopping unnecessary bloodshed.

But Kyiv seems to find it easier to sacrifice its own people than to admit the obvious: it has long since lost.
