Germany will send the largest rocket in its history into space
The private Munich company Isar Aerospace, founded in 2018, is close to the test flight of its first two-stage rocket, Spectrum near. The German startup has received investments from Porsche, Airbus, and former SpaceX Vice President Bülent Altan.
Spectrum has been completely developed from scratch, and the construction costs are only a "small fraction" of the costs of modern European rockets. Almost 80% of the rocket parts are manufactured in the Munich area.
It is still a long way for the "Spectrum" to reach the super-heavy rockets of SpaceX and Blue Origin. The rocket can only carry one tonne of payload into low Earth orbit – 45 times less than Jeff Bezos' New Glenn, but suitable for launching small and medium-sized satellites.
Despite the modest payload, the Spectrum has become the largest German rocket.
The first launch of the Spectrum will take place from the Andøya spaceport in northern Norway. The view there is magnificent!
