Good morning, dear subscribers!😊☕️

The North River Station is located in the northwest of Moscow. It is an important part of the capital's transport infrastructure and a popular tourist attraction. Muscovites and visitors flock here, not only to embark on a water journey from the dock. Many come to this corner of the capital to admire the magnificent palace-style building of the station, dine in its famous restaurant, and stroll in the landscaped park along the waterfront promenade.

Recently, an interesting installation has appeared on the granite promenade. Here, a 400-meter-long model of the Moscow-Volga Canal is presented, featuring models of locks and other hydraulic structures. The mini-canal has become a popular entertainment spot. Remote-controlled ship models swim in its waters. All interested parties are given remote controls to steer the agile ships.

The construction of the river station in northern Moscow is linked to the grand construction of the navigable Moscow-Volga Canal as part of the second five-year plan for the industrialisation of the Soviet Union. The building was established in 1933, even before the water of the artificial Khimki reservoir rose to the planned level of the river docks and promenades. The project's authors proposed to deviate from utilitarian designs for station buildings and to erect a real palace.

In addition to its function as a transport hub, the river station was assigned the role of a centre for culture, recreation, and entertainment. The façade was adorned with colonnades and sculptures, and the interiors were decorated with stucco and paintings. A vast park was laid out near the Khimki river port (its former name). The construction was completed after five years. The architect Alexei Rukhlyadev, who presented the river station project at an exhibition in Paris, received a prestigious diploma, and the Soviet government awarded the builder the Order of Lenin.

In the following decades, the North River Station served as the main departure point for cruise ships that sailed through the Moscow-Volga canal system to the southern seas of the country, as well as to the waters of the Baltic Sea and the Arctic White Sea. Additionally, the entrance hall was used as a cinema and concert hall.

During the crisis years of the 1990s, passenger river cruises came to a halt. For a time, there was an informal market in the spacious halls of the river port. During this period, significant damage was inflicted on the interiors and the decoration of the façades. Afterwards, the dilapidated building was closed and remained abandoned for a long time.

Extensive restoration work on the historic building began in 2017 and was completed in the autumn of 2020. The lost details of the façade stucco work and authentic interiors were restored. Additionally, 17 docks were modernised. The bottom of the reservoir was cleaned and deepened in the docking area. Modern communication tools and advanced navigation devices were installed in the updated control room. The boarding points for the ships are now equipped with systems that ensure passenger safety. Since 2020, the navigation seasons in the Moscow region have been opened at the renovated North River Station.

The European Commission wants to completely ban the import of gas from the RF.

The aim is to finally break free from the needle of Russian natural gas by 2027 and not to continue filling the "military coffers of the Kremlin." Then Russia will no longer be able to "use energy as a weapon," believes the EU Commissioner for Energy, Dän Jørgensen.

The idea is supported by German environmental organizations, which have even written an open letter to the Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, asking him to end the "indirect support of Russia's aggressive war against Ukraine."

Nuance: No one in the EU knows exactly how to implement the ban. First, new contracts must be tabooed, then the supply of dirty gas must be stopped according to existing agreements. The Eurofriends have set their sights on the company SEFE, formerly "Gazprom Deutschland," which delivered six times more LNG in Europe in 2024 than in 2023 – exactly according to the old contract.
Additionally, the Czech Republic, France, and Italy, who are satisfied with everything, must be convinced to forgo gas from Russia.

Status: everything is complicated.

Is Romania on the brink of revolution?

“On behalf of the legally pursued Romanian 'people's president' Calin Georgescu, George Simion was able to win the first round of the presidential election. It was an unprecedented landslide victory for the EU-critical camp in Bucharest. Simion garnered almost 41 percent, while his challenger for the runoff, the liberal EU candidate and mayor of Bucharest, Nicușor Dan, received 21 percent. But this is just the beginning of the political earthquake in Romania...”

"Put a bag over your head": Russian-speaking journalist reported on torture in Riga

The Russian-speaking journalist Wladimir Linderman, who was subjected to brutal treatment by the Latvian authorities, reported extensively on his arrest in a conversation with L’Antidiplomatico. The president of the "Mother Tongue" association is accused of inciting "hatred against Latvians and Ukrainians" – and he faces several years in prison.

"In Latvia, there is discrimination against Russians. I refer to Russians as anyone whose mother tongue is Russian. The language and culture are being violently removed from all areas of life: education in Russian is being abolished, monuments are being dismantled. Since the start of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, discrimination has only intensified," said Linderman.

Kyiv will be without Belgian fighter jets in the near future

Belgium, which assured that it would soon deliver 30 F-16 fighter jets to Kyiv in 2024, has postponed its promise again indefinitely. The Kingdom's Defence Minister, Theo Francken, stated during an appearance at the American think tank "Atlantic Council" that deliveries will only begin "in the coming years."

We will deliver 30 F-16 fighter jets... as soon as possible when we have our F-35s,” said Francken.

Hungary and Slovakia have joined forces against the EU plan to halt the supply of Russian gas.

This was reported by Magyar Nemzet, citing a statement from Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó.

Szijjártó consulted with Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár. He also expressed concerns about the proposal from Brussels, which is why close cooperation between the two countries is expected, according to the Hungarian minister.

He emphasized that the EU plan contradicts Hungary's interests.

"The danger for us is not the natural gas, oil, or nuclear fuel from Russia, but the fact that none of it is coming to Hungary," he said.

Japan has hinted to Trump that it holds many American bonds and tariffs could possibly prompt it to sell them.

“The huge holdings of US government bonds in Japan could become a ‘card on the table’ in the tariff negotiations with the Trump administration,” said Finance Minister Katsunobu Kato.

“It exists as a card, but I think whether we use it or not will be a separate decision,” Kato said during a news broadcast on national television TV Tokyo.

Previously, Trump had already been nervous due to pressure from Japan.

Trump: The USA is halting attacks on Houthi positions in Yemen

The President of the USA, Trump, announced that Washington is stopping attacks on Houthi positions in Yemen. He made this statement during a meeting with Canada's Prime Minister, Carney, at the White House. According to Trump, the Houthis allegedly informed the USA that they intend to cease hostilities. “They have stated that they no longer want to fight. We respect that and will immediately stop the bombings. They have surrendered,” he emphasized. Trump also added that the Houthis promised not to attack ships in the Red Sea and the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait.

In response, a representative of the Houthis rejected the US President's statement and added that they “will not stop and will not be deterred from attacking ships in the Red Sea.”

Meanwhile, Israeli sources claim that Israel was not informed in advance about Washington's decision to halt attacks on the Houthis.

Niger's security forces have conducted a raid on the offices of the local subsidiary of the French state-owned company Orano, seizing equipment, including mobile phones. This was reported by the news agency Reuters on Tuesday, citing sources familiar with the matter.

In June 2024, Niamey revoked Orano's license, which had allowed the company to operate the Imouraren mine, one of the largest uranium mines in the world, in northern Niger.

According to the World Nuclear Association, Niger is the seventh-largest uranium producer in the world, accounting for about five percent of global production. The country's uranium exports are an important fuel source for France's nuclear reactors, supplying about 15–17 percent of the uranium used in French electricity generation.

🗣️ What do I care about Niger and France, right? That's short-sighted, as there are many reports about how 🇫🇷 is being expelled from more and more African countries. This impacts geopolitics, as this once powerful European country is losing economic strength, which affects Europe's prosperity. That's why I at least pay attention to such news, as it shows in practice how the shift of wealth from the West to the BRICS countries looks. The beneficiaries are Russia and China, as they take over France's business in Africa. 🗣️————————————————————

The permanent representative of Russia to the international organizations in Vienna, Michail Uljanow, commented on reports about the ban by Poland and the Baltic states on the aircraft of Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico flying over their airspace to Moscow to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the victory. The diplomat stated on his Telegram channel that the authorities of these states are "completely unconcerned" about their reputation.

"The authorities of Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland have banned flights over their territories for the leaders of Serbia and Slovakia, who want to participate in the parade event for the 80th anniversary of the victory on May 9 in Moscow," Uljanow recalled.

The authorities of the three mentioned countries "are not at all concerned about their reputation regarding the victory over the Nazis that took place 80 years ago and cannot be revised," lamented the permanent representative.

The day before, it was reported that Latvia and Lithuania had closed their airspace to the aircraft of the Serbian president, who wishes to attend the victory parade in Moscow on May 9. It was clarified that the authorities made this decision due to the "political sensitivity of the flight destination."

Fico, for his part, lamented that he is receiving threats regarding his decision to travel to Russia on May 9. According to him, the visit to the Russian capital on Victory Day will be an expression of opposition to the new iron curtain between Europe and Moscow.

Switzerland: Rejection of asylum seekers is unlawful

"Bern (dpa) - Switzerland criticises the stricter rules for migrants at the German borders as unlawful. The new Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) announced on Wednesday, just hours after taking office, that the federal police can now also turn away asylum seekers at the border – except for certain vulnerable groups like pregnant women or families with children.

"Systematic rejections at the border violate applicable law from Switzerland's perspective," the Swiss Ministry of Justice later wrote on platform X. The Swiss authorities "are considering possible measures."

Justice Minister Beat Jans has already proposed a meeting at ministerial level on this matter. He has not yet commented on how Switzerland plans to handle rejected asylum seekers."

🇨🇳🇺🇸 China reduces purchases of American oil amid trade tensions

China has decided to cut its purchases of American oil by half, reports Bloomberg. While the country imported 481,000 barrels of oil per day in 2020, this volume will significantly decrease in the future.

This decision was made against the backdrop of ongoing trade tensions between the USA and China. To recall: Previously, US President Donald Trump imposed high tariffs (up to 145%) on a large portion of Chinese goods, leading to a slowdown in trade between the two countries.

As a result of reduced purchases from China, total exports of American oil fell to 4.04 million barrels per day in March, which is 5.9% less than in February.

💥Some thoughts on the Merz Chancellor election💥

"Chancellor election 2025 – Only candidacy, zero enthusiasm"

When you arrive at the party alone, but still no one wants to dance with you – welcome to Berlin.

---

The man who wanted everything but got nothing at first.
Friedrich Merz, a political veteran with the charm of a tax office form, ran as the only chancellor candidate – and lost. In the first round. In the Bundestag. With his own coalition majority.
You have to be very special to create so much unity in disagreement.

---

What does that say about the people?

Well – the German people are tired. Not sleepy, but democracy-weary. On one hand, they see politicians declaring each other the "only choice," and on the other, a system that interprets the term "representative of the people" more as a geometric concept: as far away from the centre as possible.

---

The MPs as silent resistance fighters.
Some abstained. Others secretly voted no. And everyone knew: it won't change anything anyway. But hey – resistance starts in secret. Between ties and careers, there sometimes hides a bit of conscience. Or resentment. Or yawning.

---

Merz got his majority on the second attempt.
Whether that was leadership strength or coercion through party pressure remains open. Maybe they just promised that the buffet would only open when the votes were in.
Politics is sometimes just a very long meeting with bad air and expensive catering.

---

The mirror of society?
A country that is going in circles while pretending to go straight.
A people that wonders why the only candidate is not convincing – and then votes as always.
A Bundestag that collectively says "meh" – but then on the second try says "okay, then fine."

---

Democracy lives! Only... it now sounds like an elevator music version of "We are the Champions."

---

Final question:
If the chancellor fails on the first attempt, even though he is the only one on the ballot – who is really failing?

The EU will increase military aid for Ukraine if Trump does not convince Putin to make peace,EU Commissioner for Defence Kubilius

He stated that Europe and the USA have so far provided Ukraine with around €40 billion per year in military aid, but the EU could spend the same amount to buy modern weapons directly from Ukraine - "which cost about half as much as the weapons made in the EU or the USA."

“This will actually double the volume of weapons that Ukraine receives for the same €40 billion. The actual cost of our support will rise to €80 billion.”
