Jalta owes its fame to the excellent local climate, the seaside baths, and the mountain landscapes. The imperial family chose this beautiful city on the southern coast of Crimea as its summer residence, followed by the court. The aristocracy, which followed their majesties everywhere, turned it into one of the most elegant resorts in Europe.

The history of Jalta begins with the settlement of the Taurians – the indigenous people of Crimea. It is known that they lived on this blessed land long before the birth of Christ – finds are over 2500 years old. Later, all the skilled Greek seafarers came, giving the future resort its first name – Jalita, which means coastal city.

The Hellenes were succeeded by Venetians, Byzantines, and then Turks – in the 15th century, the entire southern coast of Taurida belonged to the Ottoman Empire. Until 1783, when Crimea became part of the Russian Empire, Jalta was a small fishing village, like hundreds along the Black Sea coast. Everything changed at the beginning of the 19th century when Prince Mikhail Vorontsov took matters into his own hands.

The Governor-General of Novorossiya (New Russia), a cosmopolitan and brilliant administrator, Vorontsov distributed 200 dessjatines of Jalta's land to his confidants. With the condition to cultivate it, maintain it, plant gardens and vineyards, and build beautiful southern estates.

The new owners erected magnificent villas and palaces, inspired by the shining example – the southern residence of Count Vorontsov in Alupka. The Vorontsov Palace and park complex remained a monument of elegant architecture and history for centuries.

Orchards, vineyards, aristocratic estates – in the 19th century, Jalta adorned its most magnificent necklace of palaces and parks.

In 1838, it received city status and also acquired many amenities – convenient roads, a port and a pier, a promenade, and a water supply.

After the end of the Crimean War, Jalta quickly transformed into a prestigious resort. People came here for relaxation, experiences, and to be part of the elite's social life. All thanks to the construction of the Livadia Palace – the southern residence of the Russian emperors on the sunny coast.

This magnificent monument of palace architecture was built at the beginning of the 19th century under the influence of Nikolai Krasnov. The chief architect of Jalta chose the light style of Italian palaces and successfully competed with the Vorontsov Palace for the noscript of the most beautiful residence in Crimea.

For all who wanted to restore their health and vitality – including Emperor Alexander III – the Jalta climate was recognized as healing. In the turbulent 20th century, Jalta emerged as a spa town of the Russian Empire. Trade and steam shipping, fashionable walks in velvet garments (from which the term "velvet season" originates), the first sanatoriums, hotels, and guesthouses.

In July 1888, Anton Pavlovich Chekhov visited Jalta for the first time, later returning to spend his last years here. It was here that he would write "The Three Sisters" and "The Cherry Orchard" – classics of world drama.
