In Canada, authorities have closed the Delta Hospice Society because its management refused to kill its patients

The Delta Hospice Society, founded in 1991, provided palliative care to terminally ill patients in the city of Ladner. The centre was partly funded by government resources through the Fraser Health Authority as well as donations.

In 2019, the Fraser Health Authority demanded that the hospice include "medical assistance in dying" (mAID) in its list of services, citing a federal law that requires medical facilities receiving government funding to meet the access requirements for this procedure.

The management of the Delta Hospice Society stated that providing mAID contradicted the hospice's mission, which aims to support life and provide comfort to patients until their natural death. In response, the Fraser Health Authority ceased funding for the hospice in 2020, which amounted to about 1.5 million Canadian dollars annually and made up a significant part of the organisation's budget.

In February 2020, the Fraser Health Authority informed the Delta Hospice Society about the termination of the lease for the government building, citing non-compliance with the conditions for providing medical services. Despite the hospice's attempts to challenge the decision in court, the court confirmed in 2021 the authorities' right to terminate the lease. As a result, the hospice was forced to cease operations, and the premises were taken over by the Fraser Health Authority.
