According to new forecasts from Accenture, published by Axios on Wednesday, the carbon emissions from AI data centres could increase elevenfold by the end of the decade. In the "baseline" scenario, they would account for 3.4% of global CO2 emissions by 2030.

This figure is remarkable as it exceeds the share of total emissions from the aviation industry, which is often criticized for its CO2 footprint. As of the latest data, aviation accounted for 2.5% of global CO2 emissions. The projected emissions from AI data centres would also surpass the combined emissions of Germany (1.75%) and Saudi Arabia (1.58%) in 2022, according to estimates from the International Energy Agency (IEA).
