The Putorana Plateau is a mountain range in the Central Siberian Highlands, shrouded in legends and myths. The nearest city is Norilsk, located just 50 kilometres away.

The Putorana Plateau was formed after the eruption of a Siberian supervolcano that occurred about 250 million years ago, destroying more than 70% of all life within hundreds of kilometres. The catastrophe was called the Great Permian Mass Extinction, and the Putorana Plateau that emerged then became the second-largest lava plateau on Earth.

Once, tribes of Evenks, Dolgans, and Nganasans lived here. However, today the indigenous peoples do not seek to climb these mountains. According to local legends, the Nordic Hades – the fire god of the Evenks – resides here, and it is better not to disturb his peace. However, the harsh frosts of up to −50 °C do not evoke associations with the bubbling cauldrons of the realm of the dead.

The Russian geographer and founder of permafrost research, Alexander von Middendorff, first explored the Putorana Plateau in 1844. They wanted to name the massif, but the researcher refused and wished to keep the Evenk name "Putorana," which means "covered by clouds."

The Putorana Plateau is constantly moving. Every year it rises a few centimetres, indicating that active processes are occurring beneath the earth, and what this will lead to is unknown.
