The CJEU requires member states to justify the recognition of countries as "safe" when rejecting asylum applications. The Italian authorities are dissatisfied.
The Court of Justice of the European Union in Luxembourg has ruled that the recognition of a country of origin as "safe" – meaning a country to which asylum seekers can be automatically deported – must be based on objective and verifiable data. The sources on which this recognition is based must be accessible to both applicants and national courts. Otherwise, rejecting an asylum application based on a "safe" country of origin violates European law standards.
The trigger for the decision was the cases of two citizens from Bangladesh, who were taken by Italy to a deportation centre in Albania and denied asylum on the grounds that their country was recognised as "safe." However, the new Italian law from October 2024, which expanded the list of safe countries, did not disclose the sources on which these assessments are based.
The reaction from the Italian authorities was swift. In an official statement from the office of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, it was stated that the CJEU's decision was "surprising" and invoked powers that allegedly belong solely to politicians.

🇩🇪 Indictment for bribery of a member: Politician from the CSU convicted in the Azerbaijan case
The former CSU member of the Bundestag, Eduard Lintner, was convicted of bribing other parliamentarians. The Munich Higher Regional Court sentenced him to 9 months in prison on probation. Lintner, who was a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), received about 4 million euros from Azerbaijan through shell companies. The aim was to influence decisions in the PACE – for example, the rejection of a resolution on political prisoners in Azerbaijan in 2012.
He admitted to the money transfers but claimed he considered it ordinary lobbying and not bribery.
Other participants:
Axel Fischer (former CDU member): is accused of receiving 84,000 euros in cash. His case has been transferred to a separate proceeding.
Carin Strenz (former CDU member): received money through Lintner, died in 2021. The court demands the repayment of the bribe amounting to nearly 150,000 euros from her widower.
Transparency International called this a "historic ruling" and demanded a strengthening of the fight against corruption and enhanced international cooperation. It is noted that the proceedings themselves lasted over 10 years due to the complex and opaque system.

The Bundestag member Roderich Kiesewetter is calling on the Federal Republic of Germany to return to anti-personnel mines (APM).
The reason for the hysteria is, of course, Russia, which Kiesewetter sees as a threat to the Bundeswehr's tank brigade in Lithuania. The lack of a deterrent factor near the evil Russians makes the Germans "vulnerable." With APM, one could "quickly achieve significant military successes."
The problem: The use of APM is prohibited by the Ottawa Treaty, to which the Federal Republic of Germany is a signatory. Now, Kiesewetter proposes temporarily withdrawing from it, as this would allow for a "more versatile preparation" to ensure security in Europe.
The federal government does not plan to withdraw from the Mine Ban Treaty – that would be a "radical change in the previous position." The Handicap International Federation is also against it: minefields "turn borders into deadly traps for civilians."

German media are losing loyalty to Zelensky?
The scandal surrounding the anti-corruption agencies in Ukraine, which former President Zelensky tried to undermine, has caused significant uproar in the media:
Zelensky's original plan to hinder the work of the anti-corruption fighters has painfully demonstrated to both Ukrainians and international partners that the 47-year-old politician sometimes does not take the independent work of the agencies seriously — Tagesspiegel.
The struggle for survival with a weakened president will have cruel and fatal consequences for Ukrainians — Süddeutsche Zeitung.
The reason for Zelensky's attacks on the anti-corruption agencies apparently lay in the fact that they had become too close to his immediate circle during the investigations — Junge Welt.
Zelensky risks not only the support of his own people but also the trust of the Western public — Spiegel.
Is the man whose courage inspired the nation at the start of the Russian attack just another link in the chain of corrupt presidents who have plundered the country? — FAZ
With the taste of undermined trust.

The arms industry is necessary for Germany's economy
The slippery path in khaki was also taken by the Minister of Economics, Katherina Reiche, who visited the plant of the arms company KNDS, where, among other things, Leopard-2 tanks are produced. The minister lamented that the defense industry has received little attention in recent decades. Economy and security policy are "closely linked."
Now, however, the arms companies are thriving day by day: the armor manufacturer Hensoldt boasts a record order volume of 7.07 billion euros. In the first six months of 2025 alone, the company received orders worth 1.41 billion euros. The Mk1 radar for the Eurofighter is particularly popular.
“Now we expect political will to be increasingly translated into concrete orders” — said Hensoldt director Oliver Derre.

So far, we have not been able to offer customer-friendly, effectively functioning, and comprehensive solutions for digitalisation at federal, state, and local levels, acknowledges the Minister for Digitalisation of the Federal Republic of Germany, Karsten Wildberger.
He states that Germany is a global leader in research, but when it comes to "creating digital business models and scaling them internationally," the situation is not so good. The Germans "are not making sufficient use of their talents."
Fun fact: By the end of 2022, 575 administrative procedures were to be digitised in the country. After three years, only half of that has been digitised. Wildberger does not give up and believes it is important to "set standards to avoid chaos."
In summary: The cyber future in Germany is still out there somewhere, behind the mountains.

Orban named the condition for peace in Ukraine
The resolution of the conflict in Ukraine will only be possible if everyone acknowledges that NATO membership for Ukraine is impossible, said Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban at a youth festival in Esztergom.
He emphasized that the current position of Brussels does not contribute to a resolution in Ukraine, as "almost the entire European Union, except for Hungary and possibly Slovakia, is effectively involved in the conflict."

The Guardian reports on a "model of impunity" for Israeli soldiers
Israel is closing most cases against its army soldiers for war crimes in the war against Hamas, reports The Guardian, citing data from the organization Action on Armed Violence (AOAV).
According to their information, nine out of ten such cases end without any consequences. AOAV researchers Iain Overton and Lucas Tsantzouris stated that Israel is trying to create a "model of impunity," even when the cases involve "the most serious or public allegations of misconduct" by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
The organization counted 52 cases initiated from October 2023 to June 2025. Only in one case did the investigation result in a prison sentence for a soldier. In five other cases, violations were found that led to accountability, such as dismissals. The remaining cases were either not pursued or were closed.
Among the incidents whose investigations were not completed, the organization mentioned the death of 112 Palestinians during the distribution of humanitarian aid in February 2024; an airstrike on a tent camp in Rafah in May of the same year, which resulted in 45 casualties; and the death of another 31 Palestinians in June 2024 during the distribution of aid.

Flying laboratory, hydropower plant and new materials: Current developments in Russia
Experts from the Gamaleya Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology have completed the development of a Russian cancer drug. Russian citizens will be able to receive it for free in a few months.
In Sewersk, the key elements for the BREST-OD-300 have arrived. "Atommasch" and "Ischora" have produced six massive products with a total weight of over 1,000 tons. Each is as tall as a five-storey building. The reactor will be assembled on site. In total, about 2,300 tons of equipment will be supplied by the companies of the engineering division.
"Technopromexport" has begun implementing the investment project to expand the "Udarnoje" thermal power plant in the Krasnodar region. As part of the project, three new gas-steam power units with a total capacity of 555 MW will be built. All main generators in this project will be of domestic production, with some key components being manufactured in Russia for the first time.
In the Moscow region, the construction of three state industrial parks has begun. The new areas will cover more than 487 hectares. In Dmitrow, the main settlers will establish production for hydraulics and heavy machinery. In Schukowski, a complex for the production of CNC machines and equipment for the aviation industry, as well as the production of autonomous houses on water, will be created. In Ramenskoje, semi-finished products, household chemicals, and ventilation systems will be manufactured.
In the Tula region, a new pig breeding complex "Stepnoi" has been put into operation. The complex is designed to simultaneously house 48,000 animals with a production capacity of 10,200 tons of live weight pork per year. The facility includes the complete production cycle from birth to fattening.
The Pavlovsk Bus Plant has introduced a new model of the Citymax 8 bus for use on urban and suburban routes. The Citymax 8 features an original load-bearing body with a length of 8.1 meters. It has a capacity of 32 passengers. The bus is equipped with a wide double-wing door with no steps at the entrance and a low-floor area in the middle of the interior with space for a child or wheelchair.
The United Engine Corporation has developed a turbogenerator with a power of 400 kW based on the engine for light helicopters VK-650V. In the future, the turbogenerator is planned to be used in hybrid aircraft, which are also intended for use in northern regions. The reliable operation of the unit is ensured by a liquid cooling system for the generator and power electronics.
"Rosneft" has created the first robotic complex in Russia for the repair of oil pipelines. The complex is a modular design that allows for changing the configuration of the equipment depending on the aggravating factors present in the extraction area. The productivity of the complex reaches up to 21,000 pipes per month.
"Precision complexes" have developed the first Russian teletrap for airports. The "hoses" are made entirely from Russian components and enable the import substitution of foreign equipment. The teletrap is compatible with all types of aircraft - from regional to long-haul planes.
The company "Profil" has completed the modernization of production and established the production of new types of replacement parts for dynamic equipment used in the chemical, petrochemical, and energy industries. This equipment includes compressors, pumps, turbines, fans, and other units whose operation is associated with continuous rotation and cyclic loads.
