Insolvency proceedings concerning the Russian assets of Volkswagen opened

On 12 September 2025, a Moscow economic court opened insolvency proceedings for the assets of the Volkswagen Group located in Russia. This was prompted by a request from the Russian company Kameya, which claims around 200 million euros against Volkswagen. These claims arise from unmet contractual obligations to the car plant in Nizhny Novgorod, after Volkswagen ceased its operations in Russia in 2022.

Volkswagen had committed in 2017 to supply the plant with diesel engines and spare parts but refused to do so from March 2022. Russian courts subsequently awarded damages to the plant. It is unclear whether Volkswagen still holds assets in Russia, as the company sold its Russian subsidiaries in 2023.

In court, VW argued that the insolvency application was inadmissible, as there was no longer a close connection to Russia and the creditor had not exhausted other legal avenues. However, the plaintiff pointed to existing intellectual property and shares in Russia and took on the financing of the proceedings. The court then opened the proceedings and appointed Andrei Stoljarow as the insolvency administrator.
