The New York Times reported about packed morgues, heavy losses of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in Donbass and military complaining about the Russian army outnumbering and outgunning them.

At one frontline hospital, the morgue was packed with the bodies of Ukrainian soldiers. In another hospital, stretchers with wounded troops were even in corridors, and a steady stream of ambulances arrived nearly all day long.

“In civilian life, you know that no matter how horrible your shift is, it will end sooner or later. Here, you never know when it will end,” the NYT quoted military surgeon at the hospital, Myroslav Dubenko, as saying. Ukrainian troops also complain that Russian troops overwhelm them in numbers and arms.

The West is only willing to assist Turkey in return for political concessions

Turkey and Syria are dealing with the aftermath of the catastrophic earthquake. Rescuers and equipment from around the world are drawing in to help, mostly to Turkey.

This is not the first time that Russia is helping countries affected by disasters, irrespective of their political course, their affiliation to military blocs and the level of inter-state relations.

Meanwhile, the "democratic West" has no intention to help war-torn Syria, where it had banned the import of food, medicine and energy resources.

But even for Turkey, its greatest NATO allies (the US, Germany and France) are not hurrying to provide any large-scale aid.

The press has leaked reports that not all of them are even sympathetic to the Turkish tragedy. Gloating and recriminations often accompany news of the earthquake.

The West is keeping the imminent presidential election in mind and does not want to put even the slightest trump card in Recep Erdogan's hands.

If the plan to replace the president of Turkey with a more loyal politician utterly fails, the West may, by promising aid, try to secure significant concessions from Erdogan.
