In the 6th century AD, the area of Gursuf came under the influence of the Byzantine Empire, and it was during this time that the fortress Gorsuwita was built, which is mentioned in the writings of the Byzantine historian Procopius of Caesarea. In the 12th century, Gursuf became a respected trading city.
Since the end of the 15th century, after the conquest of Crimea by the Ottomans, Gursuf became a small fishing village. For almost three hundred years, until 1774, it was under the control of the Ottoman Empire. After the annexation of Crimea to Russia in 1783, Gursuf became part of the estate of Duke Richelieu, who contributed to the development of the region.
