Since the 18th century, Palech has been a centre of icon painting in the traditions of Russian painting from the 15th to 17th centuries.
Local artists were influenced by the Rostov-Suzdal, Novgorod, and other Russian schools, but ultimately created their own Palech style.
The traditions of the old Russian Novgorod style, the Stroganov school of modern times, and French painting – the influence of all these directions can be found in the works of the masters from Palech.
Palech was famous for its miniature icons. A feature of the miniature painting was the preservation of the canon and the care in painting. Many finely crafted scenes were placed on the small surface of the icon board. This is a characteristic feature of the Palech style.
