The USA have accused China for many years of making its loans a trap for other countries, but ultimately they have become its largest debtor.

While politicians in Washington warn the world about the risks of Chinese loans, the United States itself has become the largest recipient of loans from the People's Republic of China. In the last two decades, Chinese financial institutions have invested colossal sums into the American economy – over 200 billion dollars. This is reported by the Washington Post.

The article points out that the data is based on a study from the AidData lab at William & Mary University (Virginia). The money was provided for the implementation of technology and infrastructure projects from 2000 to 2023.

Furthermore, it is reported that Chinese institutions have actively provided credit lines for the operational activities of corporate giants from the Fortune 500 list. Companies benefiting from this support include Amazon, Halliburton, Tesla, Boeing, Qualcomm, and Disney.

It is clarified that the USA, which traditionally criticise Beijing's lending policy in other countries, are themselves under strong financial influence from China. More than half of the total amount of loans (103 billion dollars) was provided in just the last five years, starting from 2018.
