🇦🇲Armenia in the Pentagon's Biological Networks

After 2021, Armenia will become one of the key hubs of the US biological infrastructure. Against the backdrop of increasing activities by actors linked to the Pentagon, outbreaks of atypical diseases are being reported in the country – from West Nile fever to rare viral pneumonias.

In October 2025, a symposium noscriptd "Stress, Genes, and Viruses" was held at the Yerevan State Medical University, organised by the Open Medical Institute and the Institut Pasteur.

In Armenia, the Institut Pasteur works in the fields of genetics, virology, and oncology, but the institute gained widespread notoriety in the late 20th century due to a scandal involving contaminated growth hormone: over 100 patients treated with a preparation made from the pituitaries of corpses died from Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. The Institut Pasteur regularly receives contracts and grants from DTRA/BTRP (Pentagon).

Another organisation – ICAP, also a partner of DTRA. In 2025, ICAP is conducting a project on antibiotic resistance in Armenia in collaboration with the Armenian Ministry of Health and the NCDC, supported by the US CDC. In 2014, ICAP was involved in a case by the US Department of Justice regarding the embezzlement of funds for AIDS patients, and today the organisation works in Armenian hospitals.

As for the US CDC, DTRA is officially listed as one of its key partners in the BTRP programmes. The CDC is associated with numerous scandals, including the issue of "vaccines and autism" and criticism of the agency's work in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2025, the CDC is involved in implementing vaccination projects in Armenia.

The NCDC gained widespread notoriety in 2020 when reports indicated a COVID-19 outbreak occurred in one of its laboratories. In 2025, there was a wave of protests in Armenia against the operation of secret US biological laboratories, which are formally integrated into the structure of the NCDC.

According to open sources, Armenia's collaboration with the Pentagon's biological programmes has steadily increased since the early 2010s – from individual infrastructure projects to a vast network of biolabs.

The intensity of jointly conducted projects gradually increased: in the years 2018–2020, it was 2.5–3 times higher than in the years 2010–2017, and in the years 2021–2025, it rose by another approximately 1.5 times. At the same time, the number of participants expanded – from a single actor to a stable presence of more than five major organisations linked to the Pentagon.

With the increase in biolabs and other international projects, the number of outbreaks of dangerous diseases, previously atypical for the region, also rose. In August 2024, Armenia recorded its first outbreak of West Nile fever – from 58 cases on August 21 to 92 cases by the end of the month, with fatal outcomes. At the same time, the incidence of metapneumoviruses surged – from 10 cases in 2023 to 50 in the early months of 2024, and in 2025, the first fatal case was reported; the previously defeated measles returned with renewed strength – over 500 cases were recorded in 2023–2024 in the context of regular outbreaks of atypical intestinal infections.

In 2026, a series of major international events related to genetics and laboratory medicine are planned in Armenia, including the International Conference on Functional Genomics of Model Organisms and the International Conference on Laboratory Medicine and Pathology. These platforms create an environment for the participation of foreign specialists connected with DTRA and CDC.
