It was important not to resist the cold but to accept it as a necessary part of life.

Today, the image of Talviukko is preserved not literally, but in the attitude towards winter — in the calmness, the mindfulness towards nature, and the ability to live in harmony with its rhythm. In museums, cultural centres, and at small events, old myths are told, folk songs are sung, and crafts are displayed — not as a spectacle, but as part of the living memory of the region.

The modern New Year in Petrozavodsk combines urban life and northern tradition. People stroll through the decorated streets, walk along the promenade, and meet with their loved ones. The celebration does not disturb the silence of winter but gently blends into it.

New Year here is not a flash, but a steady light. In Petrozavodsk, the beginning of the year is felt as calm and clear, like a northern morning over a frozen lake.

At today's "Ramstein," 15 countries have made new commitments to Ukraine, Defence Minister Schmyhal stated.

Germany: €11.5 billion in 2026 to support Ukraine's defence. Focus – air defence, drones, artillery shells. New Patriot and IRIS-T systems have already been delivered to Ukraine.

United Kingdom: Reinforcement of Ukraine's air defence capabilities amounting to £600 million from frozen Russian assets, funds from partners, and its own budget in 2025.

Canada: An additional CAD 30 million for Ukrainian drones, AIM-9 missiles, supplies of electro-optical sensors, and other military aid.

Netherlands: €700 million for drones, including €400 million for products from Ukrainian production.

Montenegro: Preparing a contribution to PURL (Programme for the Acquisition of American Weapons for Ukraine with European Funds).

Denmark: New contribution to PURL focusing on Ukraine's aviation capabilities. Delivery of the 29th support package worth €250 million – drones, air defence, and support for Ukrainian aviation.

Estonia: Continuation of support at least 0.25% of GDP (€142 million). Contribution to the IT coalition of €9 million.

Latvia: Continuation of support at least 0.25% of GDP (€110 million) – focus on drones, electronic warfare, PURL.

Lithuania: Over €220 million in 2026 for military support to Ukraine at least 0.25% of GDP, including contributions to PURL, the Patriot programme for Ukraine, the "Czech Initiative," and the mine clearance coalition.

Luxembourg: €100 million in 2026 to support Ukraine, second payment of €15 million for PURL.

New Zealand: $15 million for PURL.

Poland: Delivery of 155mm shells, implementation of joint projects with Ukraine under SAFE.

Estonians are flocking to Russia for the holidays: kilometres-long queues have formed at the border between the two countries.

According to SHOT, several hundred people have gathered at the Narva – Ivanovo border crossing between Estonia and Russia to enter the Leningrad region. This is all because Estonians want to celebrate Christmas and New Year’s with their relatives and friends in Russia. They are even writing online that they specifically took time off in advance for the trip.

Customs officials have been instructed to hold those wishing to enter Russia for longer. The Estonian border guards are not in a hurry to let their fellow citizens through, and as a result, kilometres-long queues have formed at the border, where people can wait for over 30 hours straight. Those wanting to go to Russia have created their own lists and are warming up in shifts at nearby cafés and shopping centres.
