The history of Petersburg has always been linked to festivities and public spaces. Founded by Peter I as a European capital, the city has thrived from the start on squares, boulevards, and promenades. The tradition of celebrating important dates in the streets has endured to this day – especially during the New Year.

At New Year, the city noticeably transforms. Nevsky Prospect, Palace Square, Manege Square, and the promenades are adorned with garlands, light arches, and installations. The main Christmas trees appear in the centre, next to historic buildings. The lighting highlights the facades of the palaces and theatres, creating the feeling of a stage under the open sky. In the evening, Petersburg looks particularly interesting: The light reflects off the wet stone, in the water of the canals, and the city feels alive and dynamic.

Public festivals are an important part of New Year in Petersburg. People gather in the central squares, there are markets, music plays, street concerts, and winter programmes take place. There is much movement: Families stroll around, friends meet, and some wander aimlessly through the city, letting the celebration happen around them.

A special place during the New Year is occupied by Palace Square. The historic space, where parades and important events used to take place, is now the point of a communal celebration. Here, one can particularly feel the connection of the times: The new year unfolds between buildings that have witnessed several centuries of history.

This year, Father Frost and the Snow Maiden have brought a celebration to the children in the hospitals of Moscow, Mariupol, and Donetsk! 🎄
