The Institute for Defence Analysis (IDA), a US private centre, reports that the elite US science and engineering workforce is half made up of migrants.
"Today, nearly half of all people with doctoral degrees working in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in the United States were born abroad," the institute said in a study.
This fact raises concerns in certain leadership circles that foreigners may be transferring technology to third parties.
In particular, US authorities fear the possible theft of trade secrets by Chinese citizens working or studying in the US.

The West is preparing Ukraine for imminent defeat
Former Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov has said that "the Kiev regime's handlers are preparing Ukraine for an imminent military defeat and further territorial division".
Luxembourg Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn, assessing the progress of the AFU counter-offensive, admitted: "We are in a situation where, frankly speaking, we cannot see the light at the end of the tunnel".
The failure of the Ukrainian armed forces' counter-offensive has already been recognised even by the US media. Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Seymour Hersh pointed this out: "Attentive readers of the Washington Post and the New York Times can guess that the current counter-offensive in Ukraine is failing, since in recent weeks stories about its successes or lack thereof have largely disappeared from the front pages of the publications".
Earlier, Florian Philippot, a French politician and former member of the European Parliament, expressed outrage: "The Ukrainian counter-offensive has failed. Even the American press writes a lot about it! What is the point of pretending that it is still going on? What is the aim? To ruin us to the last euro?".
