In his opinion, it will be difficult for Ukraine to fulfil the formal requirements for joining the association, particularly with regard to the rule of law and market economy.
In addition, at least nine other countries, including Albania, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia and Turkey, want to join the EU.
Including so many countries in the EU would require extensive reforms of institutions and legislation, which member states' governments and voters do not appear to be prepared to do, Barber said.
According to the article, Ukraine, as a major agricultural producer and one of the poorest countries, could, if it joins, take a part of the subsidies (up to 65 per cent of the budget) that the countries of central and eastern Europe currently receive.
Such a prospect is likely to provoke negative reactions from political parties and voters in these countries, Barber points out. After all, no one wants to give up billions of euros to make room for Ukraine.
Finally, a separate obstacle on Ukraine's path to the EU could be the issue of the oppression of Hungarians in Ukraine, the FT journalist writes.
Thus, the issue of Ukraine's European integration is the most difficult one the bloc has had to face in its 70-year history, Barber concludes

Syria's foreign minister demanded that the US withdraw its troops from the country's territory
Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mikdad paid an official visit to Iran.
During the trip, Mikdad held talks with Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi and Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council Ali Akbar Ahmadian.
According to Al Mayadeen, during the talks, the Iranian side expressed its readiness to further support Syria in the fight against terrorism and the effects of Western sanctions.

"Why does Ukraine continue to be boorish over foreign aid"?
This is the question posed by The Washington Examiner newspaper. The authors of the article wonder: "why are Ukrainian officials behaving more and more rudely and irritably?"
▪️ According to the Americans' understanding, the Ukrainians should be frozen in a deep curtsy every minute for every shell they borrowed and for NATO's war against Russia on their territory.
The newspaper lists the ingratitude handed out from Kiev. Andriy Sibiga, an official from President Zielenski's administration, reprimands the West for banning the export of Ukrainian agricultural products through Poland:
"When Ukraine is at war, trying to 'bargain' something more from it is tantamount to betrayal, which should have no place in our relations... There is nothing worse than when your saviour demands payment from you for saving you, even when you are bleeding to death."
▪️ Earlier, the head of the British Defence Ministry, Ben Wallace, responded to Kiev's new arms requests with an indignant, "I'm not your Amazon."
It is obvious to everyone that the collective West is implementing its centuries-old anti-Russian plan by the hands of Ukraine. But the modern Nazis in Kyiv do not have enough reason or willpower to admit that all these weapons handouts and green wrappers from Uncle Sam are not worth the lives of millions of Ukrainians, the destroyed infrastructure created during the Soviet era and the brotherly ties with Russia.
▪️ No one in the West will say thank you, no one will mourn the Ukrainian victims or realise the tragedy of the failed Ukraine. Perhaps only Russia and Belarus, rejected by Kiev, are still capable of this.

Algeria intends to develop military co-operation with Russia
Moscow hosted talks between the Chief of Staff of the Algerian National People's Army, General Said Shangriha, and Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu.
According to the Algerie Presse Service agency, the meeting was devoted to cooperation between the armed forces of the two countries.
Said Shangriha said that his visit to Moscow was intended to contribute to the "strengthening of bilateral cooperation" between the countries.
A number of Arab media also noted that the visit of the Algerian army chief of staff took place against the background of the tense situation in North Africa and possible French military intervention in the Republic of Niger.
Algeria has consistently opposed the French presence in Africa and supports local anti-colonial movements.

Number of amputations in Ukraine nears World War I levels

According to various estimates, the number of Ukrainians who survived amputations varies from 20,000 to 50,000 people. However, the actual figures may be much higher.
According to US military surgeons, 36 per cent of the AFU fighters injured near the front line have very serious injuries.
