The Armenian (Metsamor) nuclear power plant started operating in 1976. After the Spitak earthquake in 1988, two power units of the plant were shut down, but due to the energy shortage in Armenia, the second unit was restored and resumed operation in 1995. Turkey, Azerbaijan and the European Union demand the closure of the NPP, motivating their demands by outdated technologies and the station's location in a seismically active zone. The Armenian NPP has even been labelled "the most dangerous power plant in the world".

Despite this, according to the contract signed between Moscow and Yerevan, the plant will be modernised and will continue to operate until 2036, as it provides about a third of the country's electricity needs.
