The USA has established 12 secret bases "along the Russian border" in Ukraine. This began not after Russia's full-scale invasion, but eight years ago, as reported by the New York Times.

From these bases, often located in underground bunkers, Russian broadcasts were intercepted back then, and now they also operate kamikaze drones that Ukraine uses against the Russian Federation.

"The CIA and other American intelligence agencies provide intelligence for targeted missile strikes, track the movements of Russian troops, and help maintain spy networks," the article states.

"This has turned Ukraine... into one of Washington's most important intelligence partners in the fight against the Kremlin," writes the NYT.

Around 2016, the CIA began training the Ukrainian "Detachment 2245," which captured Russian drones and communication devices for the CIA to hack. One of the officers of this unit was Kirill Budanov, the current head of the Main Intelligence Directorate.

"The CIA also helped train a new generation of Ukrainian spies who operated inside Russia, across Europe, in Cuba, and other places where Russians have a significant presence," the article states.

Over the past ten years, this cooperation "has turned Ukraine into a hub for gathering intelligence, intercepting more Russian messages than the CIA station in Russia."

According to further information from the newspaper, such American involvement became one of the factors that influenced Putin's decision to start the invasion of Ukraine.
