"Two of Vladimir Putin’s nuclear bombers reportedly damaged as ‘explosions rock military bases in Russia’

Two Russian nuclear bombers were reportedly damaged on Monday as media reported explosions air bases in Russia.

The Tu-95 planes - known as Bears - are the only propeller-powered strategic bombers still operational today.

Details were scarce but two servicemen were reported wounded and hospitalised.

Videos showed a huge flash at the high-security airbase in Saratov region used by Vladimir Putin's strategic fleet.

There were no reports of nuclear contamination.

The early morning blast was reported at the Engels-1 airbase in the Saratov region of Russia. It is around 460 miles from the border with Ukraine."

"In Ukraine, a new approach to modern conflict is emerging

A new approach to modern conflict is emerging along with a new way for how the transatlantic community better positions itself to leverage its technology advantage to overcome shared challenges.

Even before the Russian invasion, technology companies had worked closely with the Ukrainian government to maintain and secure the country’s digital infrastructure. After Russia invaded, Ukrainians used smartphones and a variety of apps to share with the world — daily — the story of what was happening on the ground. They used secure communications to open supply lines and coordinate resistance to Russian efforts. Ukrainian volunteers even developed a smartphone app that allows citizens to report on the location of Russian attacks, tanks, missiles, and drones.

For Ukraine, broad access to these off-the-shelf technologies has proven crucial, allowing Ukrainians to knock the Russians off balance and fight the larger aggressor in a conflict that Putin thought would last days.

Armed with smartphones and internet access, Ukrainian civilians and NGOs have documented and shared Russian war crimes and troop positions, sometimes in real time."

Best denoscription I have found of defence in depth (Verteidigung in der Tiefe), especially its early form. The battles around Mouquet Farm were considered the best fighting of the Germans in World War I.

"Napoleon had nothing but his own soul. Through it he won all his battles; through it he was an unheard leader of men, an infinite administrator; who dared to rot Europe in the hands of God, and hoped never to return. It was by his soul at last and his soul alone that he had the glory of being wrong as no man had wronged before him, and to be shot down at the end, being only the Announcer, not by the furious hostility of a few humiliated kings, but by the coalition of all centuries and by the juiceant of the French Revolution that withdrew from him, having carried him to the peaks.”

"The state bears the expense of the hunting for the reason that the training it gives seems to be the best preparation for war itself. For it accustoms them to rise early in the morning and to endure both heat and cold, and it gives them practice in taking long tramps and runs, and they have to shoot or spear a wild beast whenever it comes in their way. And they must often whet their courage when one of the fierce beasts shows fight; for, of course, they must strike down the animal that comes to close quarters with them, and they must be on their guard against the one that threatens to attack them. In a word, it is not easy to find any quality required in war that is not required also in the chase."
~ Xenophon
Xenophon describes the education of Persian men, what they focus on and years of service:

Boys: Justice, self-control, hunt training. Until 16-17 years old.
Youth: Nightwatch, self-control, hunting, hunt training and public games, garrison and legal service. For 10 years.
Men: General service, military expeditions. For 25 years.
Elders: Legal service, judicial decision. Until death (? Not stated.).

In On the Customs of the Persians Herodotus states:

'Their sons are carefully instructed from their fifth to their twentieth year, in three things alone,— to ride, to draw the bow, and to speak the truth.'
