Architecture of the Byzantine world

From the beginning of Muslim expansion until the final arrival of the Russian Empire, the Caucasus was a dangerous place. So it is not surprising that castles have existed there for a very long time, and this fortified palace in the city of Dusheti is excellent evidence of this. Completed in 1800, it is very similar to European castles of the 17th century, which combined both palace and defensive functions. The square castle is protected by three towers, and one of its halls is a chapel.

Saint Theodore Church, Kampos Avias, Greece.
This modest church was built during the rule of the Despotate of the Morea, and its main adornment is the richly decorated iconostasis.

Saint John the Baptist Church, Alexin, Russian Empire.
The Baroque church with its tall bell tower was the architectural dominant feature of the town, especially considering that most of its houses were two-story. Unfortunately, the church was destroyed by the Bolsheviks.

Gothic-Byzantine catholicon of the Agios Neophytos Monastery, Cyprus.
From the Gothic the church borrows mainly the lancet arch, but it is difficult to say if the modest decor of the facades is caused by the influence of the Renaissance or by the decision of the builders. In addition, the catholicon is a hall church - its aisles are only slightly lower than the central nave. The Gothic influence is also noticeable in the iconostasis, but it was probably made a little later than the church itself.

Dudino monastery, Russia.
The 16th-century bell tower is the most interesting structure of this otherwise ordinary monastery. In addition to its respectable age, it is one of only a few tent bell towers of quadrangular form in existence. During the Soviet era, the tower was almost completely lost, but fortunately the surviving Imperial drawings made it possible to restore it.

Vinica terracotta "icons", North Macedonia.
An interesting example of Byzantine art found in the fortress of Vinica. The slabs, of course, were not true icons, but rather a decoration, because Christian content in the form of quotations from the Bible on some of them coexist with scenes of ancient mythology.
